Hollyoaks has a small viewership but a higher percentage of a teen fan base and a big social media presence, the show is not consistent anymore, it's fallen badly under BK as noted on here many times by people, it's has a huge turnover of plots that it's loosing track of them, he favors stunts, deaths and mayhem, quick plots or prolong ones that get dropped for months on end and rarely has any aftermath.
Eastenders has and always will be a entirely different soap and caters to a different audience, BK couldn't pull the same tricks he did at Hollyoaks which ultimately led to his exit.
As for listening to ppl on twitter or facebook, take it with a pinch of salt as opinions on here it doesn't and shouldn't dictate the running of a show, when the TPTB start doing that is says they can't do their job properly.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that it's because EE is a 1st/2nd most popular soap at times and despite it not getting the same ratings as others it still has a niche audience and possibly because it the only southern soap.
Hollyoaks bespoke to the younger generation, the other two audience I would say is in the middle or much older.

It is. EastEnders beat Emmerdale all week (it only lost out due to a big week in the dales with Donna's death) Corrie and EastEnders have been very close in the ratings.
