In retrospect: What do you think of the Derek Branning/Kat affair storyline?
I personally loved this storyline reveal
But what was the general consensus on the forum leading up to the reveal? Did people suspect it was Derek? What was the reaction, and did people think this was realistic or ridiculous? |

It was a terrible storyline that ruined Kat as a character and the reveal wasn't all that either.
The only good bit was Derek lighting up the cigar |

Because we didn't see the chemistry between Derek and Kat, the storyline seemed very stupid and contrived. I'd rather of seen the affair take place to show somewhat depth to the story

It was terrible, probably the worst thing I've ever seen. Kat gets her beloved baby back alive and she decides to screw the most unlikable man on the square instead of devoting herself to her child.

Appalling and a really obvious reveal considering Derek had to be shoe-horned into every plot.
It was never really explained why Kat would go for him let alone admit to loving him. |

Probably the only good thing about it was that it lead to Derek's Death.

Awful - there was nothing attractive or appealing about Derek whatsoever. Would've been better if it was Ray (an underused, wasted character) but he was the first one ruled out, if I remember rightly?

I'd rather just forget that it ever happened. Derek Branning had so much more potential before he was introduced and absolutely ruined, and Kat is better than cheap affairs and 'who's the shagger' plots!

It was awful ill-thought out repetitive clap trap, the only thing I liked about it was the end reveal scene with Derek!
Who the Shagger s/l just didn't work but then whole show was going through a rather strained time and from there the show just went downhill, although it did give Kat a chance to repair herself when she was separated from the muppet that is Alfie. |

I wish it had been Max, purely for the fact that we could add her name to the "I love ya babe, it's always been you Kat, none of the others (insert name here) mattered" joke.

The storyline was dragged out for toooo long and the spoiler about Derek's departure at Christmas made me believe it was Derek.
But in retrospect, it was the perfect storyline for Kat. A large, media frenzied whodunnit to frame (excuse the pun) her final last affair, bring her to absolute rockbottom, take her away from Alfie, focus on her Tommy, build a friendship with Bianca and then rebuild her as a character piece by piece. You couldn't have Kat always shagging and continuously having affairs, they needed a large storyline to break her down and redeem her future, and put an end to her past - those scenes with Kat and Whitney, both signally their ends to their pasts of sexual abuse were really powerful and one of the best episodes of 2013. |

Baby-swap excepted, it was the worst storyline EastEnders has ever done.
Why was it so bad? Precisely because the producers promoted the 'Who's shagging Kat?'' element as if this was some kind of hilarious guessing game. When in reality, it was the story of a filthy old slapper cheating on her husband for the 1millionth time. Tacky, sleazy and completely revolting. |

I actually thoroughly enjoyed the reveal. To me, that episode and actually that period (I enjoyed Xmas 2012!) was the closest it got to the EastEnders of old under Newman's tenure.
However, Derek's death underwhelmed me massively. It all built up but ended up being a bit damp. But the episode up until that point was very exciting. |

The worst storyline I've ever seen in my 11 years of watching the show. If they'd shown it as Derek from the start and really developed the Harry similarities it could have been fascinating- the few scenes we had between Derek and Kat after the reveal were intriguing- but instead it was five months of utter contrivance.

I really didn't mind it. I enjoyed Eastenders in 2012. The reveal was brilliant, but the storyline itself did go on for too long.

If Kat had not already cheated on Alfie about 5 times and the storyline wasn't a mystery, I am pretty sure I would have liked it. Derek was very dominating and controlling of Kat which was interesting since she tends to be quite a feisty character.
Could of, Would of, Should of though. The storyline was a disaster from conception, whoever thought it would be a good idea for Kat to cheat AGAIN was obviously off their head. The reveal episode was pretty good admittedly and the aftermath wasn't half bad either but then Derek died ruining any chance of anything interesting happening. I probably would have preferred the cheater to be Max actually since he is the only half way interesting Branning Brother. Stupid idea, badly executed, woefully handled and lets hope Kat never cheats again. |
