But how much good does one isolated game a week, airing FTA at 2am on a work night really do?

The point for the NFL is they have quite a number of people (like me) who have a passing, casual interest in the game - i.e. those who tune in for a Wembley game and the Super Bowl. But even with decent FTA coverage on C4 over the past few seasons, it's been unable to transfer me into a season-long fan who follows the sport week in, week out.

Speaking personally, the Wembley games and Super Bowl continue to be important as 'events' that keep me interested. But SNF doesn't work for me - I already take in 2 or 3 Premier League matches a weekend and don't have time to commit three hours to an NFL game in the middle of the night, or on tape delay. Some well-packaged highlights telling me the big stories of the league each week would be much more useful - especially if they were then available somewhere like the BBC Sport website where I browse every day. I'm not sure if that's what the NFL is aiming at, but I think it would be a format much more likely to sustain my interest over a season.

That would probably be for the best, but will the NFL be willing/able to sell highlights off the full year to a broadcaster? Play off highlights are great, but what about the rest of the season. It's fairly hard to follow a team when you can only watch highlights of their last few matches, and only if they're among the best...

The bit is bold is key to growing the sport to a degree where a London franchise is viable for me.

I have Sky, I have BT, I watch a tonne of NFL (and college) live but I am a) single b) have no life and c) a sports nut. In the autumn and early winter my weekend are just full of Football, College Football and the NFL but I am not the target market for the casual fan who can really get into the sport.

If there was a weekly highlights show late one night on BBC2 for example once a week then the casual fan may well watch quite a bit of it or as the person quoted above said - even on the BBC website. Many NFL fans will hunt out highlights on NFL.com but maybe people who don't think about it might click on a link on BBC whilst they are looking for football, cricket et al news.

Losing SNF is a small blow to the terrestrial NFL fan but if they got an hours weekly highlights show to replace it then I think the blow would be cushioned considerably.

Sky going to be ambitious again. We've had 92 live when they went around every football league club in england now they doing NFL32 Live (9th september I think)

Indeed. I think the prospects of a London franchise have been a little overhyped. There's a long way to go till its viable, in my opinion (and that's even setting aside the logistical challenges).

It's all very well and good filling out Wembley for two or three matches a year - but London's a huge city and you can do that based on novelty value, existing fans and some aggressive marketing. But to sustain a franchise they need media coverage and lots of it - yes, that does mean live TV if possible, but its also about regular exposure in the sports news, in newspapers, on websites. etc. where it can reach those who don't go seeking it out. It's really hard to achieve, but I think matters every bit as much as live games in terms of growing the sport.

People on the NFLUK forums are saying that PickTV will be showing the live Sky coverage of Packers v Bears on the 1st Sunday night of the season. Part of the deal for Sky signing up SNF?

Can confirm its being shown on Pick. Schedules don't go any further than that yet though.

If that's true it would mean a live game on FTA in the UK at the very viewer friendly time of 6pm- and if they do that every week - WOW!

Of course if that happens we will have people moaning on here and NFLUK forums that's it not available in HD

Would this include Pick Freesat or is it just on Pick Freeview? Some time ago when Sky Sports was free for a day it was not on Pick Freesat.

I guess it depends if the NFL are happy with free coverage being picked up in other countries via satelitte. I know the Premier League don't for football hence the restrictions.

***PICK TV KLAXON***

This would be stunning news if long term for the full season.

Is this the first time that live sport has actually been shown on pick TV, notwithstanding the free sky weekends.

No - they have had a couple of things on there but over a couple of years.

Pick schedule now out for Sun 20 Sept - no NFL.

Schedule also updated today for Sun 13 Sept - and NFL is still there - Packers @ Bears from 5.30pm to 9pm.

So looks as if it is a one-off for the opening weekend.

Yep that would make sense, the only reason Sky 2 and Pick channels are available on all FTA platforms is to be a hook for people to sign up to Sky Sports and Movies.

Every single commercial break on those channels is stuffed with Sky sign-up adverts.

The first NFL game is just that, a bit of bait to get people throwing £45 Sky's direction.

Goodbye NFL and thanks for being such tight-fisted morons Channel 4.

Sky2 is not a free channel nor is available on all platforms.

Well that kind of proves my point, with Sky, nothing is free and everything is just a piece of bait to draw us in to paying a huge subscription.

That's a shame, did seem too good to be true, particularly given the timeslot.

I thought it had already been confirmed the BBC has the Superbowl and Wembley for the next 2 years?

It's still not officially confirmed by NFLUK or BBC. C4 have thought put out a quote that remaining free coverage has gone to the BBC. But nothing said on what would be covered.

I don't think it would do Sky any harm to each week simulcast the 6pm game on a FTA channel. I think it would act as an incentive for non-subscribers to sign up so they can watch all the other games on Sky Sports. They could only gain subscribers not lose them.
I'm a Sky sports subscriber and would not cancel in a huff just because one game a week is simulcast on FTA. I would applaud them for it in fact.
