Obviously there were subsequent negotiations to that which saw Sky pick up the Sunday Night games for two years. They could have discussed giving a game exclusively to the BBC in those. Which looking at the schedule for October 4th does not seem too unrealistic.
That afternoon Sky will be showing the final day of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, a rugby league double header with the Championship One Playoff Final followed by the Championship Shield Final.
And a Super Sunday lineup of Everton vs Liverpool and Arsenal vs Man United.
As much as they may have a free channel, I doubt they would be expecting it to rate that well. Those are some of the most attractive soccer matchups to general sports fans and the NFL was always sold as being non-exclusive. They would still have their usual exclusive NFL triple header in the evening anyway, so it is a minor concession really.
