They had allowed enough time, it just ran over more than a game usually would. You cannot schedule for the most extreme eventuality (with over time, injuries, and a power cut, a game could be near five hours long).
You cannot compare it to the overnight games as Sky only schedule three hours for them. They will almost always over run, I guess Sky just feel it is better to drop programmes than to have to fill time with unscheduled ones.
But the BBC had allowed three and a half hours which is usually enough to include a full game and a bit of a wrap up. It is not often that Sky's early evening games run into the late ones since they were pushed back to 9:25pm.
The BBC were just unlucky.

No, that was the only one.
Next Sunday's game between Buffalo and Jacksonville will be on BBC Two, Sky, and Yahoo!.
As an experiment the NFL will be streaming the game globally for free. Yahoo! won the rights to carry the game, although coverage will be produced by CBS as it will still be broadcast in the two teams' local markets in the US.
And the Detroit at Kansas City game on November 1st will be on the BBC Red Button and Sky Sports.
BBC Two will be exclusively showing the rugby league first test between England and New Zealand.
