On a non scheduling note, Neil Reynolds said yesterday on Twitter that he will be in Chicago for the draft with Jeff Reinebold.

That should mean the end of the studio set up in London, with those two in place in Chicago (similar to where Dara Kennedy & Jim White were last year) for the breaks in NFL Network coverage.

Neil may not be universally popular but I think we can all agree that him being there is a BIG upgrade over Jim White (the next thing Jim learns about the NFL will be the first).

ESPN's Monday Night Football play-by-play guy Mike Tirico jumps to NBC, likely for Thursday Night Football

I think I heard somewhere that 2016 will be Al Michaels' final season broadcasting NFL, so presumably Tirico will partner Cris Collinsworth on the NBC Sunday night games for the 2017 season.

Big loss for ESPN/ABC. Tirico had been there forever, and he covers loads of sports - NFL, college football, NBA/college basketball and golf.

A little surprising they open the season with a repeat of the Super Bowl, but that is certainly one way to make a splash.
Doesn't surprise me at all.

Seems like for the last few years if the schedule has thrown up a rematch of a championship or Super Bowl then it is almost a shoe in for the opening night

Al's contract covers the 17/18 season so he will call their next Super Bowl. I suspect if he wants to re-up for three more years and he continues to be as good as he currently is then NBC won't show him the door. I think Mike will have to wait another cycle for the top job.

More likely Mike replaces Costas for the next three-year SB cycle after 17/18 and hosts SNF and prime time Olympics from 2018 along with calling TNF (alongside Peyton?) and being lead for the British Open and Ryder Cup golf events. Could he also become the voice of Notre Dame football on NBC?

Plenty of gigs around that would keep him occupied and interested whilst not shoving Al Michaels out of the door just yet.

Absolutely no reason for Michaels to be retiring yet, he's still the best in the business. Hopefully this is just NBC getting their long term succession planning in place and, as has been said already NBC have plenty of stuff to keep him busy without shoving Al out the door. Tirico is 49 and Al is 73 I think so Mike can certainly afford to play the waiting game for SNF.

This is also about the severe financial difficulties ESPN are facing due to declining cable subscriptions. They are losing people left and right (Skip Bayless the awful hot take artist is also leaving, probably for Fox, it was announced today).

Same was said about Murray Walker when he retired on F1 commentary. But im sure its a combo of reasons such as wanting to just rest and enjoy time with his family.
There always comes a time when we just have to stop.

This move has been mooted for months and is more succession planning than replacement. NBC are acutely aware that there are very few men who would be a suitable national replacement for Michaels in a few years time and are looking to tie Tirico down before ESPN do. As others have said there is plenty to keep him busy in the meantime.

What this says more is about the ESPN strategy that has failed. In recent years they've allowed Fowler and Tirico to encroach more and more on others territory in order to keep a hold on them. Now one is leaving it's going to leave a very big hole to patch over and fill

All of the main US Sports channels could halve the number of "Studio analysts" without any detriment to the product. That would save a lot of money.

Looking at the season openers, since 2004 when the Super Bowl champion was first made one of the teams to play the Thursday night game, there has been one match-up of the previous season's conference championships, when New Orleans played Minnesota in 2010. The two most recent super bowl teams have never met in the Thursday night season opener before. There is only a one in four chance those two teams would meet the following season in any year.

Given how much the networks pay for the rights, the extra costs of the additional studio analysts is a drop in the ocean. You do make a good point about there being too many of them though.

Brad Nessler is also set to leave ESPN for CBS and will call NFL games but will long term be Verne's replacement on the SEC on CBS. Means another potential hole in ESPN's college play-by-play duties. Could we see the return of Brent Musburger to potentially ESPN's #1 team with Fowler/Herbie as the abc lead? Looks like more dominoes to fall yet.

One in eight really as it has to be a home game for the SB winner.

NFL Network is doing a draft red carpet thing where they're asking players girlfriends about what they're wearing. At this point I'd rather be watching Sky.

i'm hoping we get the US network coverage for the draft itself as watching the 3 from SKY is terrible analysis compared to how the US do it

i dislike dara kennedy enough as it is without having to watch her present the full draft , what i've seen so far has just been shockingly bad

There is a free broadcast from NFL Now online, it isnt as good as the full NFL Network coverage but is a lot better than the alternative

Mike Mayock on NFL Network just declared-

"Jacksonville are a play-off team this year, folks!"

I think the draft madness has kicked in.

So with Kennedy and Reynolds making the trip out the Chicago to meet up with Jeff Reinebold does this mean that Kevin Cadle has gone now ?

Reinbold annoyed me. Every time the Jaguars were mentioned he was assuming that UK viewers would have some sort of special interest. Here's news for you, Jeff: not even the folks in Jacksonville have any interest in the Jaguars!

Sean McDonough is confirmed as play by play commentator for MNF, working alongside Jon Gruden and Lisa Salters.

From ESPN Media Zone;

Broadcasting Veteran Becomes MNF’s Fifth Play-By-Play Voice All-Time

Sean McDonough, one of sports television’s most versatile broadcasters, will be the new play-by-play voice for ESPN’s Monday Night Football. He will work alongside analyst Jon Gruden and reporter Lisa Salters when the 2016 NFL season kicks off this fall.

McDonough – whose broadcasting resume includes the World Series, NCAA Final Four and the Olympic Games – has worked on major properties including college football, college basketball and Major League Baseball in recent years. He has also called NFL games for ESPN Radio since 2013.

McDonough has been with ESPN since 2000 – his second stint with the company (previously 1989-95) – and recently signed a new extension. He becomes just the fifth person to occupy the play-by-play position in the 46-year history of MNF, joining broadcasting stalwarts Keith Jackson, Frank Gifford, Al Michaels and Mike Tirico, who called the past 10 seasons on ESPN.

“Sean is a premier play-by-play commentator who combines a signature voice with intelligence, passion and humor, and he always brings out the best in his partners,” said John Wildhack, ESPN Executive Vice President, Programming and Production. “Monday Night Football has a rich history and a bright future ahead with our new booth team of Sean and Jon.”

“This is a dream come true,” said McDonough, who will make his MNF debut at the Pro Football Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, on Aug. 7. “One of my favorite memories of my childhood was watching Monday Night Football with my Dad, who I know is smiling down on me today. I am humbled and deeply honored to have the opportunity to be a part of the most iconic franchise in the history of sports television.”

Added Gruden: “I have met Sean and I am excited about the opportunity to work with him. Like me, he comes from a family of three boys. Passion for sports has been a way of life for him and his brothers. He’s a seasoned pro, who’s called some of the biggest sporting events, including lots of football. I’m looking forward to getting started.”

McDonough joins MNF from the college ranks where he has been a top play-by-play commentator on Saturday afternoon ABC college football and ESPN’s Big Monday ACC basketball games. McDonough recently called the NCAA Final Four for ESPN International, and he has also provided play-by-play for ESPN for Major League Baseball, NHL, tennis, golf, the College World Series and other college sports.

Prior to ESPN, McDonough was the television play-by-play announcer for the Boston Red Sox from 1988-2004. He also spent 10 years at CBS Sports when he was the network’s lead college football play-by-play announcer from 1997 to 1999. As CBS’s lead Major League Baseball broadcast voice in 1992 and 1993, he called the All-Star Game, the National League Championship Series and the World Series. McDonough’s other CBS assignments included a diverse array of sports – men’s and women’s college basketball, NFL, golf, U.S. Open Tennis and the Olympic Winter Games.

In addition to MNF, McDonough will continue his ESPN college basketball assignments after the NFL season.

Live coverage of the playoffs & Superbowl LI are included in the UK version of NFL gamepass for the first time this year.
