Agree..that was ridiculous, well to me anyway.
I guess a British scenario would be bowler hats and brollies...or a bit of a cockey pearlie/queen knees up ..
(When Trent and Pixie came out I genuinely thought it was going to be a German oomp , slapping ze knees kind of thing. It was so off the mark for the Netherlands..shocking

I absolutely loved that opening ceremony, I started to watch not intending to do so for more than 10 minutes and then watched the whole thing, bonkers and brilliant at the same time,
Just exactly like the bouncing nurses on the beds!
Polishes pride in being British badge and pah to furriners. Do their nurses not bounce on the beds? What a dreary place their hospitals must be.
Serious comment I am very, very proud of the NHS, best in the world according to the world health institute, 1st in 14 out of 15 categories including best value for money and safest, no mention of that eh ,Daily Mail, or Mr Cameron.
Of course things go wrong, it's run by human beings, and when they do, it is news , as such incidents are unexpected and unusual and incredibly sad.

I'd never seen that before! Morris dancing amuses me so much. My Dad actually did it for a while when he was younger, which baffled me slightly (he has no rhythm and pretty much zero interest in dance) until he explained that mostly they met at the pub. By the time I was a kid, his bells and hat had migrated into my dressing up box.

I loved the opening ceremony as well, actually. It was just brilliantly bizarre. Utterly ridiculous in the best way for me. I have no idea what the rest of the world made of it but it made me laugh a lot and I loved the sly poke at David Cameron over the NHS.

I also think the MoJ should consider that as a punishment for magistrates and judges to dish out. Might reduce recidivism

Morris dancers come to my local pub every year (the pub is less than 50 metres from my front door - I'm not daft). They do a couple of dances, which involve a lot of bashing sticks, and then bundle into the bar for the rest of the night.

As an Amsterdam resident I was frankly shocked at that dance. It was a total faux pas from the BBC. Dressing people in German outfits in Holland was beyond insensitive. Are they not aware of the implications re: WWII.
Also the language spoken in the VT was not Dutch but some German dialect.

I don't think Strictly producers care frankly. I really wish they would go back to what it was originally - pure dance without the gimmicks.

I'm sorry. It was pretty shocking. I think they read the snarky comments calling Pixie and Trent Hitler Youth or whatever and they decided to give that a wink - but they couldn't come at it, straight on, or it would be too touchy so they "cleverly" concocted the scheme of using Holland as a guise.
I looked up lederhosen + the Netherlands and did find a reference: "...some Dutch boys wore lederhosen in the 1950s-70s, although on much smaller scale than in Flanders and definitely not related to Scouting. Not sure why you or anyone else is getting their lederhosen in a twist.
Vicky Gill specifically said to Zoe on ITT that the theme for the dance and the costumes was "Hansel and Gretel" - and no I have no idea why they combined a VW danced to an old Max Bygraves number with a Brothers Grimm fairy tale, just run of the mill SCD zaniness/ickiness.
Shoving "Hitler Youth" and all the other Nazi WW2 connotations, which I'm sad to say did seem to start on this thread when two blondes were paired off in the first show, is a deeply unpleasant trope to use against Pixie and Trent, and against this frothy, fun dance in particular. Deeply unappreciated.
Hansel and Gretel aren't Dutch - it's a German fairy tale. And anyway, I don't think I ever used the Hitler Youth analogy but I did call them Children of the Corn or Demonseed or something and I most dreadfully regret it. And I apologise. I just thought there was something eerie about them - like the beginning of a science fiction movie about perfect blond zombies or some such.
I love them now - both of them. And liked them ok then though she seemed daft - they just triggered strange images in my mind. I thought the poster was funny who said they looked like twin girls.
And like Bruno, I only say all this with love And I'd LOVE to twirl my fingers in Trent's glorious yellow curls (whilst he phoned 999)

Just to point out the Dutch theme was originally going to be Steve's routine and was only given to Pixie and Trent when he was eliminated. I don't think there was any long term plan to play on the Team Hitler Youth connections.
Very blonde people seem to get called 'Hitler Youth' all the time in this country - only recently I was told by one clergy person that my very blonde vicar was known as 'Hitler Youth' in his previous parish - no reflection on his politics as far as I'm aware.
I think the image of blonde, eerie children may hark back to publicity for the Midwich Cuckoos - I don't think there's much of a resemblance myself, but, you know, blonde.

I just took it to be the usual inept styling - in an episode with an greek argentine tango, lederhosen in Amsterdam don't seem particularly surprising, however crass it is when you think about it.
