Check that the disks really *are* Region 1 (or, rather, that they don't include Region 2, as that is of more interest to you), before you give up (i.e. even if you don't have a multi-region player, or one that can be made so).

Many are simply all region, or some combination that includes R2; these will play straight off (yes, even if they are American), even without a mutli-region player.

Places like Amazon.com simply claim all their disks are R1 only just to stop the hassle of having to deal with all the returns from numpties.

Most players sold in the UK are Region 2 only 'out of the box' but some (not all) can be modified (hacked) to make them multi-region.
This may either by using a sequence of keys on the remote control whilst others require a 'one-shot remote'
https://www.google.co.uk/search?num=...92.yTerc1-RdYE
Make and model would help

...or an alternative! Most (all??) recent Sony DVD/BluRay players can be made region free for DVDs (but not BluRays) by either a specially programmed one-shot remote from specialist companies OR by using many versions of One4All remotes (which can also generate the required IR codes - which the user remote cannot!)

Many DVD players can be easily unlocked to region free by entering a code with the remote.

I have also found this website that has many unlocking codes and procedures explained: http://www.dvdexploder.com/dvdsales.htm
If you can't find your model on the site, simply try e-mail them at: support@dvdexploder.com and ask if they have the code for your player model.

Hopefully I'm wrong (or haven't searched enough) but it looks like the only way to make the Panasonic DVD-S26 multi-region is with a 'service' ('one-shot') remote

Most Panasonic DVD players can only be made region free via a Panasonic Service Disc. This I what had to use with my Panasonic player which I burned to a disc after downloading the required file.
If you can download the Service Disc file and burn it to a disc then just follow these instructions. (Your probably find a torrent file via Google)
INSERT DISK- and confirm "STOP" is displayed...

USING THE REMOTE press "SETUP"

Go to "DISPLAY" menu

Select "ON SCREEN MESSAGES" then press "ENTER" button

Press ">10" found on the bottom right coner

Press "6" button

Press "4" button

Press "3" button

Press "8" button

A PASSWORD WINDOW SHOULD APPEAR

TYPE IN "3192" (The code for Region Free, is 3192. For Macrovision, it's 3193.)

PRESS THE "ENTER" BUTTON TWICE

the disk will be read, when finished remove disk

You could rip dvds to a PC and re-write to disk, then the disks will be region free.

Of course the DVD will probably be protected, and you will need a way round this (search web). Of course, you cannot on sell/distribute any copies as that would be illegal. Also, ripping from a DVD you do not own or rent is certainly illegal.

Ripping a copy from a DVD you own for personal use may not be entirely legal, but I leave it up to you to make your own "conscience" decision.

I cannot give specific ripping advice here without breaching forum regulations.

If the government get their collective fingers out, from October 1st it will be legal to make copies for personal use of CDs and DVDs that you own.

It was supposed to be introduced earlier but got delayed.

Pity we haven't followed Australia and made region locked DVD players illegal.

It used to be that only the very cheapest DVD players were easy to hack. When mainstream manufacturers such and Sony and Panasonic don't make it very hard it is obvious that the system is only being given token compliance!

No but it doesn't change the fact that it is the owner/operator of the player that makes the decision to circumvent the region protection.

My argument is that region protection isn't protection of copyright, it's protection of profit margins in different territories.

Some will argue that companies have to make profit to survive and develop new products and tech. But when the profits are generated for shareholders benefit rather than the benefit of the future direction of the company and the customers they serve, then....

And when the money generated from sales doesn't benefit the content creator....

Onion peelings indeed.

Also, if I read 296ZEA right (http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukdsi/2014/9780111116036), if the copyright holder attempts to prevent you from making your own personal copy, you can apply to the Secretary of State to order the copyright holder to change things to the extent that you can indeed make your own copy.

Doesn't that rather piss on CSS, Macrovision, regional flags, audio DRM and the like?

Anybody?

Region locked players are not illegal in Australia, in Australia players are region locked until the retailers unlock them.

The law is the same as here where it is not illegal to modify a player for region-free playback.

If you have a DVD drive in a computer you can legally and lawfully make changes to the region code before it is then locked down to the final selected region (I think it is 4) - Not used a DVD drive in about 6 years so cannot recall but have a virtual DVD drive for mounting images, as can be seen here you can easily change the region

http://www.imagebam.com/image/7c27e8349129379

On a Windows machine:
Open My Computer > Right click your DVD drive > Properties > Select the Hardware tab

Under All disk drives select your DVD drive then select Properties > DVD Region tab

I haven't tried this is a while but it is still available. You run it on PC and then even if your drive is locked to region 2, it will byass it and allow any region dvd to play.

With a region 2 DVD/RW drive in PC I've managed to "rip" region 1 disks without the need for changing region code.
