Are pea pods edible?

I got a few bags of unpodded peas today, I figured they'd make a tasty soup. I wonder, though, if it's worth throwing the whole things in. The pods taste nice, they're actually sweeter than the peas themselves, it's just that they're quite fibrous, which I guess is the main reason they're not usually eaten. Any thoughts? I don't want to die.

They might be too fiberous to eat but you can use them to make stock.

If they're tender enough though then go for it.
