The long awaited Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is strongly rumoured to ve revealed this afternoon at the Samsung Unpacked 2 event. I have been looking forward to this reveal for months, as I have been waiting to upgrade my S3 since the start of July. It will be interesting to see what the features and tariffs are for this new Phablet.

Anyone interested in watching the Unpacked event at 2pm, can be seen at the link below.

I get confused about why Samsung have both the Galaxy Note series AND the S3/S4/S5

Are there clear differences?

Yes the Note series is classed as a Phablet due to it massive size of 5.7" & comes with a stylus for various functions.

When it comes to their tablets, of which Samsung now has around 25,000,000 different models and variants, I do wonder why they have 'normal' tablets and the pen-enabled Note versions. It seems it would be far easier to produce just one, and either bundle the pen with one variant/package or or sell the pen separately.

On the phone side, I think the same could apply to the high-end models.

But Samsung thinks otherwise, yet with sales falling (as you'd expect from so many devices and a market that is slowing in some places) I think that things will change in the coming years.

It's not just a case of having the pen or not having it. The screen has a different manufacturing process to make it compatible with the S-pen. It's not the same as a regular stylus that you can buy.

Do you have to use the stylus to get certain functionality, or can you use your figure?

You can still use your finger. The stylus is pressure sensitive, it's good for things like drawing and taking notes.

I'm also interested to see what the Note 4 will bring. I have a Note 3 so I don't know if any of the changes will be major compared to what I already have, if not, I may just stick with the Note 3 for the time being.

If it's not that much of an update I'm going to demand by note 3 back from my OH and give him this galaxy S5 that I'm using now

Yes, I know. Sorry, should have clarified my point - in that it would be cheaper to make the Note model only, but still sell them as models without the pen or any mention of it (and obviously none of the S-Pen apps).

Why? because some people be happy to save just a few quid to not have the pen, and we all know in sales that even if you say 'but you don't have to use it' some people still get quite upset and adamant that they don't want it at all.

I know this from experience, and many others will have seen customers who think like this!

From Samsung's point of view, it's cheaper in the long run as you aren't making lots of different hardware. I've been to Samsung's manufacturing plants a few times and changing the software install and retail packaging is dead easy. But different hardware specs is wasteful.

Anyway, let's see what Samsung does. I doubt they'll release as many tablets or smartphones as they do now in the future.

It does feel like they are spamming the market with all their models. However they are just recycling parts from other devices and they are a huge company so it's not that hard for them to manufacture all those devices.

I do think that they need to keep the S series and note series separate as they two different device categories.

The bigger cost to Samsung now isn't just components and making different products (their production lines are set up to be very efficient and able to produce very small production runs for variants, operator-specific builds etc) but the marketing that surrounds every product.

This is another reason why I have to wonder why they're doing it. It's expensive to launch a new device, along with the launch events, operator meetings, distributor meetings, social media hype, traditional advertising - and then the retailers that don't actually want too many different variants.

Samsung thought it was a good idea when sales were increasing, but to have a tablet for almost every conceivable screen size, and then with all the variants (lower spec, mid-range, high-end premium, Note, Pro, Pro Note, Pro Tab, Tab Pro Pro, Pro S Tab Pro etc) is insane!

Yup, phone of the show I suspect.

Might not sell in large numbers (may also cost a fortune) and some journalists that got hands-ons yesterday have mixed feelings, but it's still going to be about the only groundbreaking phone launched at IFA - unless there are any other surprises.

I saw a demo of this sort of tech a while ago. I thought it was a really good use of the curved display. Not sure about the lop sided look of the note edge, but good idea.

Kind of off-topic but does anybody know what Samsung did to offend feminists?

I happened to be reading an Apple-related blog (about Apple's advertising) a couple of days ago and there were a heap of comments from people saying how they'd never buy a Samsung product on principle due to the offensive, sexist, things they did at a previous Samsung Unpacked event, possibly in 2012.

Anybody know what they're on about?

Apologies to the OP BTW. Don't mean to hijack the thread.

On topic, I nearly bought a Note 3 but, I dunno. I couldn't quite convince myself that it wouldn't be a bit too big.

I wonder if an offer may include the headset at any point, hopefully given that the note runs the headset it should be reasonably priced.

Very tempted by this phone, looks like top of the tree again for Samsung.

Not what I heard in wwjoshdew & Flossycarters clips who are at the event, but it's not coming out until october. Another Note 3 user here & the Edge looks fantastic. I'm guessing RRP at least £600 SIM free.
