toasting wholemeal bread
I am changing to mainly wholemeal bread, but toasting it seems to be hit or miss. It can get very crunchy and hard after a short time in the toaster. I tried hovis thick and Kingsmill thick so far, not much success with them. i am wondering if it is best to use the grill instead of toaster, but that takes longer.
What wholemeal bread to people who use that toasts ok? |

Toast is always one of those foods I've struggled to make, do you have a recipe?

I switched to brown bread from Warburtons Crusty last year and working my way through the various brands and varieties found that they were all really slow toasting under the grill apart from the horrible taste.
I was getting desperate when one day I came across Warburtons Premium Brown (which is made from 50% brown flour and 50% wholemeal and has 4.3g of fibre per 100g). It's only by chance I saw it in the corner shop and I haven't seen it anywhere else locally. I guess it might be in Asda but I hardly ever shop there now since the demise of most of the manned tills. It's got the best taste out of all the others I've tried and it grills nearly as quickly as Crusty. The only problem is it sells out very quickly so I can't always get it. I've never had a toaster so can't help you there. |

Could you perhaps ask your corner shop to keep you one of these loaves aside. Maybe on certain days?

Thanks for your suggestion. However my consumption of loaves isn't uniform otherwise that's exactly what I would have done. Just to satisfy my curiosity does your username mean you are a David Bowie fan?
I also loved the video to the song, so had to have the name

Wholemeal bread toasted is plain nasty. I eat wholemeal for everything except toast and bacon sarnies when it's back to white.

I only eat wholemeal these days and really that has stopped me eating toast.

I love Hovis Wholemeal toasted. Pity my local supermarket stopped selling it, the bastards.

Absolutely right. Wholemeal is better for sandwiches but for bacon butties and toast it has to be white. And fried bread too - but I'm not supposed to be eating that.

Buy the loaf and freeze it - take it out as you need it. |

Have you tried it on every setting on your toaster?
Going to use the grill next time I have toast, I have not had any for a few days. |

The grill is the only way to do proper wholemeal toast in my book, and the best wholemeal bread for toasting is Rankin's Soda bread. Stocked my major supermarkets. http://www.irwinsbakery.com/our-breads/product/42/

Why do that surprise you? i know people who lives in flats that don't have freezers as they don't have the room, they may have a icebox in their fridge but that is it.

I just think it's unusual in this day and age not to have a freezer.
