I will try the gel inserts. It's all very well to say no pain no gain, but not sure what I would gain from hobbling around like the elephant man

Persevere. The pain will lessen eventually or else you'll lose all sensation in your feet but, either way, you get to wear your beautiful shoes

You could sell them on Ebay, I guess.
Or only wear them for a special occasion, so it doesn't hurt your feet too much. |

The best you can do is sit in the house with your shoes on and just look at them
