Galaxy S5 showing wrong number in phone status
Phil Owens
05-09-2014
I recently upgraded my phone to the S5 from Orange to EE porting my old Orange number to the EE 4G sim.
However, if I check my own number in contacts it shows my ported Orange number and the EE sim number that came with the phone, and if I go into settings> about phone > status it shows the EE sim number and not the correct ported number..
Tried deleting the EE number from the contacts and rebooting but it doesn't work..

Any clues folks ?

My S4 does the same with my ported number and its been the same for the last 15 months. Not sure what to do about it but its no big deal. Guess the sim card still has the original number on it and it reads that first?

This has been raised on here before and I seem to recall that it's an Android issue. I can't remember if there was a way of sorting it or not.

If there is no Android solution you could use an old handset - many of which can edit the SIM stored number!

Old hand sets don't take a micro SIM. My old Xperia T has just been posted off for cash for old phones.
I believe only certain makes of phone will write to SIM..

SIM adapters are not uncommon!

It still seems strange if Android really cannot do this - iPhones can

Same on my note 3, any app that tries to guess my number on registration always seems to get the wrong number. I even noticed on our Mobile Management system at work it is picking up the wrong number as well. I can't believe that android devices don't ship with a utility to edit this.

I had the same problem when my number was ported to 3. I used an old Sony Ericsson phone to change the number.

Yeah I had this a few times when porting a number, the SIM displayed the original SIM temp phone number. I used a Blackberry phone which allows you to edit SIM phone number details. To be honest other than it displaying the wrong number it doesn't seem to matter.

I faced this issue too. If you have a rooted phone, install Xposed and use this module to change the number on the sim:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/gala...d-sim-t2106490

I've used this on a Galaxy S4 and a Moto G with a Three sim and a Virgin Mobile sim and it worked perfectly both times. You do need to be rooted to use this method.

Sorry, but is a rooted phone ?

Rooted means that you've got administrator rights on your phone and can tinker. Phones are locked down so users cannot delete critical stuff, rooting a phone gives you admin rights so can tinker, install software that normally isn't possible etc.

Rooting invalidates the phone warranty but many do it so they can install things like ad blockers, remove bloatware apps etc.

Both my old S3 and new S5 have this - I ported my number from o2 originally to Three, and have the same SIM when I upgraded to the S5.

My S5 just says unknown number. I don't know if it has anything to do with the fact that I'm using a three handset with an O2 sim.

Same situation here - ported from Orange to 3 with a Galaxy S3 two weeks ago.

It is an Android issue.

I've borrowed a friends redundant Blackberry Bold 9900 today to edit my sim number, unfortunately his Blackberry is locked to O2 and it returns an invalid sim error when inserted and asks for an MEP unlock code.

I've just been to the bay for an unlock code as he said I could do what I wanted with the phone as it's gathering dust.

Next problem:
Quote:
“Your phone will be unlocked to any sim that the handset model supports. Non 3g phones will not work with the "THREE" network sim cards even when unlocked”

Now, I don't require it to work as a working phone with my 3 sim inserted - I simply want to access the advanced settings menu to edit the number. can only try it anyway, nothing to lose but 99p.

I believe you can also do it with an iphone 4, but my neice wont let me near her phone in case I "wipe everyrthing"!!

We'll see how I get on with the unlock.

I understand that it is only an annoying thing that shows only in the phone settings - but it's bugging me

This thread prompted me to go and try and fix this so I used a BB Q10 at work and while the number displays properly on the Q10 when i put the SIM in my Note 3 it is now missing the last digit. So close yet still so annoying.

BB9900 is 3G capable.

Sorted

Got the unlock code from the bay and powered on the blackberry with my 3 sim card in it.

” Enter Network MEP Code “ came up on the home screen - I'd been sent an MEP2 and MEP4 code, not an MEP!!

So I tried navigating options/settings/advanced/sim but couldn't get anything from typing the instructions given MEP etc - no other menus appeared.

So I rebooted the phone and awaited the ” Enter Network MEP Code “ again, typed in the MEP2 I'd been sent and immediately the three sim number appeared at the bottom of the screen.

Scrolled down to it - pressed the Blackberry symbol and a sub menu duly appeared offering the chance to edit the sim number. Popped in my ported Orange number and saved it - the Blackberry now showed my 'proper' number.

Powered it down, put it back into the S3 and powered up the S3.

Settings/More/About Device/Status - My Phone Number finally shows the correct ported Orange number

So, just to confirm - an unlocked Blackberry will let you edit your Orange/EE sim card to show your proper number in Settings.
