HO - John Paul saying 'sweetheart'
So JohnPaul has been saying this a lot recently. For some reason it really makes me cringe every singe time, it just sounds awful. Does anyone else agree?

It sounds more cringy when he says it to Ste. I know it shouldn't but Men saying it to other Men seems strange to me.

There's been many threads on this. I think the weirdest I found it was when Ste was in a hospital gown and JP was just like sweetheart.

I know me too! It just seems so weirdly forced - I just don't buy that John Paul would use it. To be honest, I find it hard to imagine anyone that young would use "sweetheart" as a pet name.

TBF JP has said it for years and used to call others sweetheart.
I've only ever really heard older people say sweetheart personally!

He did? Well I guess that's a little better, though it still seems odd to me!

There was an episode the other day with JP and Mercedes think it's when she finally sees him after learning he's been raped and he calls her his sister Sweet Heart I found that really weird.

He also called Ste a 'poor thing' when he was recounting the troll story for Leela and Tegan at the hospital after Ste had overdosed.
I found it oddly detached and off-color, like he was just some random outsider that couldn't possibly relate to what Ste had been through, but he was giving his sympathies anyway. They're just so mismatched, him and Ste. They'll likely be the only gays in the village though for awhile yet, so it's not like the show's going to let up forcing their relationship. |

These threads beat the dead horse a lot, though.
We all know by now, JP calls people sweetheart, but most probably than not it's a James thing, since Ryan Lamb in Emmerdale used to call people sweetheart too (Coincidence?? I think not). I wish he would just drop it, but at this point it seems evident that he won't. There are more important things about JP's character than that, though, I don't think it's such a big deal. |

I agree with francy, JP called kieron sweetheart, it's a thing he does when worried about the other person.
I think how JP dresses is a much bigger concern |

Sorry guys, I didn't see the other threads.
It's just been really grating on me, when he said it Mercedes at Finns bail hearing though that pushed it to the limit. It's just so forced and insincere. Yuck! |

Ita a big deal because it takes JP out of character and into James - if that makes sense. That's why its standing out to so many people

It never really feels like a natural part of his speech, if that makes sense, it as if he has thought about before he says it and is aware of it. If you get me. Taking another soap and character - because I'm not aware of any other HO character and their speech patterns much - but when Kerry in Emmerdale says 'man' after some of her lines and favours her language with that word, it just fits and nobody really questions it because it works for the character. I don't think sweetheart works for JP, soz.

But it's been going on for years, since his first stint. He called Hannah sweetheart back then, and then many other people (friends and family, and even some boyfriends). He does it regularly, it's not a new thing. I don't particularly like it, but they have made it a JP thing and unfortunately it's not going away. You would think people would get used to it at some point??

It might have been going on for years but for some reason it's become very cringe worthy. Didn't he call someone princess last week?
And frankly, if this is JP's biggest flaw, he is a freaking saint. In a show where people kill, kidnap, cheat, lie, manipulate, rape, abuse every single day his "sweethearts" don't seem to me like the worst offense. LOL |

He called Ste princess (twice), but both times they were joking and mocking each other. No way he would call him princess in a serious/intimate situation LOL

At the start outside the hutch when he wanted him to go to Nancy's hen party, and Ste said something about being a low rent stalker, JP replied there is nothing low rent about my stalking, princess And after nana said her hubby always made her feel like a princess, Ste looked at him said like grandad like grandson, JP later called him princess |
