BBC Bristol / Somerset
Ed Hadwin (studio host) London Wasps v Bath (Aviva Premiership RU) (1400BST KO) - Andrew Sheridan and Carl Fearns (94.9FM / 95.5FM / 104.6FM / 1548MW / Online) Bristol v Connact Eagles (British & Irish Cup) - Andy Champions and Andy Short (Bristol & Bath DAB / Online) Somerset's 1566MW and Somerset DAB continued with normal programming, whilst all other frequencies carried first half of the Bath game, until a split that could really have waited, as there was 35 seconds until the Bath game went to half time, (the time at 6 minutes to three) 'us' on Bristol DAB got interrupted to go over to Ashton Gate with the teams yet to come out. (Edit for Radio Wales) BBC Radio Wales Ospreys v Cardiff Blues (Guinness Pro12 RU) Catrin Heledd host (and boasting about 'bumping into the Cyprus squad this morning) with Nick Webb and Stuart Davies on commentary (All frequencies / Online) Last edited by Ian Cleverly : 12-10-2014 at 15:58. Reason: adding Radio Wales for their 4pm commentary |

OK, I'm finally going to take the plunge and make my first contributions to this thread (what with the 2014 seasons in county cricket, rugby league, speedway and Major League Baseball all being over). As in past years, I'm going to post the links to all of the previous threads on this topic, which I hope will prove to be a useful resource.

Monday 3rd November - Free Radio 80s
Tom Ross presented The Goalzone's Sports Bar alongside Ian Taylor, Dave Allen and Rod Harringon PDC Grand Slam of Darts 2014 Draw - conducted by Ian Taylor, overseen by PDC media officer Dave Allen It was exactly the same set-up as last year with Dave Allen and Rod Harrington joining Tom and Tayls in their Birmingham studio, with Tayls doing the draw and Allen reading out the names of each player drawn out and their group. Prior to the draw (which including the preamble and reaction took up most of the first half hour of the show), they interviewed third seed and current BDO World Champion Stephen Bunting over the telephone. |

In his Sports Agenda column in today's Daily Mail, Charles Sale claims that BBC Radio 5 Live are "expected" to win "main" UK radio commentary rights to the 2015 Rugby World Cup, with talkSPORT "likely" to gain reports-only access. Previously, he has suggested in his column that Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT were both liable to win non-exclusive commentary rights. Quote:
No World Cup for Brian Unfortunately, Sale has decided to spin his report on the rights issue as a way of extending his long-running feud with Brian Moore, the BBC TV and radio co-commentator and presenter of talkSPORT's rugby union show Full Contact. Moore has subsequently responded on Twitter:BBC Radio 5 Live are expected to win main UK radio rights for the Rugby World Cup after protracted talks, that have gone on for over a year with the International Rugby Board. That will be a relief for those who had to put up with the unintelligible Brian Moore as chief pundit on talkSPORT in New Zealand in 2011. His station are likely to receive the secondary news update rights package. Read more: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/art...#ixzz3InDZWKHU Quote:
Charlie 'stalker' Sale today claims as the BBC have RWC radio rights I won't be working. I've already been confirmed as a co-comm - dullard.
Moore doesn't confirm who he'll be working for as a co-commentator (he later tweeted Sale to say his report was "completely inaccurate"), so he could be working for talkSPORT if they have non-exclusive rights along with the BBC, or even ITV (who were later mentioned in Sale's column to be favouring BT Sport talent for their coverage), but if Radio 5 Live have rights you'd imagine it's most likely that he'll be co-commentating for them as he has done at past tournaments when they have had the rights and on recent Aviva Premiership Finals when both of the radio stations he works for have held non-exclusive commentary rights. If this is the case, it'll be interesting to see if he'll be able to host Full Contact alongside his co-commentary commitments. Given that the tournament is being held in England and Wales and that most/all of England's games will take place at Twickenham, I see no reason why he wouldn't be able to unless a game he was covering was taking place on Sunday night. Indeed I mentioned recent Aviva Premiership Finals above, on the most recent occasion I believe he co-commentated for 5 Live on the Saturday and then presented on talkSPORT on the Sunday. As for the bigger issue of the UK-wide exclusive radio commentary rights "expected" to go to Radio 5 Live, while I prefer talkSPORT's rugby union coverage and the station generally so would be a bit disappointed if this is the case, I can't say I'm massively surprised. The IRB wanted to sell an exclusive deal to talkSPORT for the last Rugby World Cup in 2011 when there was interest from both stations, and I don't see why it'd be any different this time around. On a national level, BBC Radio have saved money from their sports rights budget recently when they lost out on the 2011 RWC, the British & Irish Lions tour to Australia and two Premier League radio rights packages all to talkSPORT, events they had previously won exclusive rights to. So they may have money in the pot and with this RWC taking place in the UK, I can see why they'd want it and may "go for broke" to get it by outflanking talkSPORT cash-wise. For talkSPORT, while I'm convinced they would have had a realistic interest in winning RWC radio rights - I don't think it's something they desperately need at all costs and as a commercial operation would be prepared to pay more money than coverage of the event could be able to justify and generate in return. As we know, they have a strong portfolio of exclusive Premier League commentary rights and holding commentary rights to a RWC played in the Northern Hemisphere would likely come into conflict with that, particularly during the earlier stages, and they don't have the established secondary platforms the BBC have (not just Radio 5 Live Sports Extra but the World Service too) to enable them to split their output in that satisfactory a way. |
