Test Match Special: The Ashes - The 1st test

Commentators: Jonathan Agnew, Henry Blofeld, Simon Mann and Jim Maxwell

Summarisers: Geoffrey Boycott, Michael Vaughan, Graeme Swann and Glenn McGrath

Given that we now have two more recently retired and more famous English offspinners as part of the TMS team, I wonder how much we'll hear of Vic Marks this summer. Would be a shame if he's being phased out of the big games.

Yeah I agree I hope he isn't being phased out. He is not mentioned on the coverage page on the BBC Sport website which I was a little worried about. Hopefully he will be on duty for the third test.

I know I'll be committing sacrilidge for many on this thread, but if TMS want to phase anyone out, wish they'd look at Henry Blofeld. he's a lovely chap, and I get that the non-cricket lover who just tunes in probably likes his style, but as a cricket commentator, he's utterly hopeless. words in the wrong order, not having a clue whats going on or miss identifying players. TMS is a wonderful programme, but it is brought down when he's on. give him something in the lunch or tea intervals if they want to keep him but please move him away from commentary. gets tin hat out...

On Monday, ESPN Radio covered the 2015 Home Run Derby with Jon Sciambi and Peter Pascarelli commentating and Chris Singleton and Marc Kestecher at fieldside conducting interviews, with the former also contributing to the commentary.

The St. Louis Cardinals @ Pittsburgh Pirates series was the subject of ESPN Radio's Saturday Game of the Week and Sunday Night Baseball coverage at the weekend - Sciambi and Singleton commentated on both games, with Kestecher presenting from the studio on Saturday and Kevin Winter being their studio host on Sunday.

Thursday 16th to Monday 20th July - @TheOpen Radio

Richard Kaufman presented live coverage of The 144th Open Championship from the Old Course at St Andrews

Commentators: Ron Jones, Matt Adams, Sue Thearle, Paul Eales, Richard Boxall, Gordon Brand Jr, Alison Walker, Carl Paulson, James Byrne and Alan Tait

Interviewer: Rob Nothman (as BBC Radio 5 Live)

@TheOpen Radio was available on 87.8FM as a restricted service licence station in the local area of the course, as well as through live audio streams on The Open's website and mobile app and on TuneIn. They also provided daily podcasts through The R&A's audioBoom page.

I'm glad I held fire on posting these details over the weekend - with the weather pushing the championship into Monday, it meant @TheOpen used two quite different teams over the scheduled first four days and the final round.

For most of the championship, we heard most of the same core team @TheOpen has used for many years - Richard Kaufman expertly working in the anchor role, with six main commentators out on the course. The main change from past years was that there was no Robert Lee, with him effectively being replaced by Sue Thearle - so we had three lead commentators in her, Jones and Adams with three summarisers in Eales, Boxall and Brand Jr. Alison Walker was also listed as (and tweeted about) being part of their coverage, but I didn't catch her involvement so I'm not sure how much of a role she had. We also heard cameo appearances in the studio with Richard from talkSPORT's Bob Bubka (who was covering The Open for them with Rupert Bell) and RTE Radio's Greg Allen.

It was then all change on the final day, with many of @TheOpen's commentators having other commitments (I'm not sure if all had other events to attend or if some were drafted in by other broadcasters). Of their original team, only Kaufman, Jones and Adams remained, with them being joined former US player turned SiriusXM golf host Carl Paulson, local professional James Byrne and BBC Radio Scotland Golf Show presenter Alan Tait.

For the latter stages of the final round, Jones and Paulson followed the Louis Oosthuizen and Paul Dunne group, Adams and Byrne were with Jason Day and Jordan Spieth, while Tait was out on the course switching from group to group including that of Marc Leishman and Padraig Harrington. With so many contenders, back in the studio Kaufman was doing as much commentary as anyone, following the early starting leaders such as Zach Johnson. All six were involved in their commentary on the Johnson, Oosthuizen and Leishman play-off.

Great coverage once again by @TheOpen Radio, they have so many strong commentary voices and coped admirably with having to make a number of last minute changes going into the final day. With both BBC TV and Radio 5 Live starting their coverage in the afternoon on some days (notably the Monday), having @TheOpen Radio available as providing full and uninterrupted coverage throughout the championship was very welcome.

I've said this before in other threads but I'll raise this prospect again here - with talkSPORT 2 launching next year, and having indicated they're open to broadcasting output from external sources (William Hill Sports Radio has been mentioned), they really should consider coming to an agreement to carry @TheOpen Radio's coverage, maybe with Bubka and Bell being permanent additions to the team in the process. talkSPORT held non-exclusive commentary rights to The Open for many years so I'm sure getting permission won't be an issue, and it would be great for this service to be available on a national DAB platform, particularly ahead of the TV rights moving to Sky Sports in 2017.

As a footnote to the excellent BBC Radio county cricket coverage details that Connor consistently posts, I thought I would highlight this rather excellent and very helpful Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/TuneInLiveEvent

The clue as to what the feed consists of is in the name, as it aims to list the BBC Live Event streams each county cricket commentary is being broadcast on, which is particularly useful for people who listen to the matches via radio apps such as TuneIn.

I'm not sure if the person who put that feed together is aware of our forum, if so I hope she won't mind me saying that she doesn't always get it right when trying to identify the commentators working for each service (having put together what I hope were a few comprehensive posts tracking a few matches in Connor's absence I can sympathise - it isn't always easy!), so I wouldn't always take those details as gospel but in terms of tracking down the streams it's invaluable for TuneIn users. It has saved me a lot of time having to cycle through the 20-odd Live Event channels to find the matches I want to listen to.

I listened to a bit of this last night once it got underway. Rick O'Shea was also BBC Radio Wales Sport's man on the boundary, where he was interviewing fielders while the game was in play!

The full commentary team was Edward Bevan, Tony Cottey and Gareth Rees. James Kirtley wasn't involved in their coverage as far as I heard, he wasn't namechecked at the start or the end of the programme.

As mentioned above, Cork co-hosted both Wednesday and Thursday's Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast shows from Edgbaston. He then stuck around to provide punditry during Jon Norman's reports from the Test Match on both days, although he wasn't there on Friday. Jack Bannister's contributions to talkSPORT during The Ashes seem to be limited to being used as a phone guest before and after most days' play, which is a bit of a shame.
