Cricket: Tour Match
Northamptonshire v Australia - Alex Winter, Lizzy Ammon, Dan Norcross (days 2-3), Adam Collins (days 2-3) and Geoff Lemon (days 2-3)

The above was the commentary team for the weekend's play, with the Friday of the match being completely washed out due to rain. Had there been play on the Friday, I'm not sure who'd have been commentating with Alex Winter and Lizzy Ammon at Wantage Road as Dan Norcross was at New Road for the T20 Blast game and the two ABC commentators were at Canterbury for the Women's Ashes Test.

I think Dan Norcross was primarily there to update BBC Radio 5 Live on T20 Blast Finals Day - although it sounds like he and Kevin Howells switched roles for the second semi-final.

Out of interest, how did BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra cover the second semi-final? Did they run a special online-only stream? I ask because commentary on rugby league's Challenge Cup Final was on 5 Live Sports Extra while that match was taking place, what with Radio 5 Live prioritising Premier League football as usual.

It's easy to be wise with the benefit of hindsight to say that they made the right call on what they broadcast, what with 5 Live's featured Premier League commentary being Crystal Palace's upset win at champions Chelsea and with Leeds Rhinos' 50-0 win over Hull KR being the most one-sided Challenge Cup Final I can remember. But I've long felt that the Challenge Cup Final, along with the Super League Grand Final, is one of the few rugby league games that should take priority over standard early-season league football. Had they prioritised the Challenge Cup Final on 5 Live, they'd have been able to broadcast T20 Blast Finals Day in full on 5LSE as well.

But of course the flip side of the coin is that Premier League football commands a far greater level of interest than rugby league or county cricket, and 5 Live are set to see their Saturday sports output dominated by rugby (albeit union) more than most years what with it being a Rugby World Cup year.

It was evidently a difficult call for them to have made on Saturday so I don't want to be too critical of 5 Live's decision makers on this one, but it's a shame that the domestic sporting picture was so busy that 5LSE couldn't broadcast T20 Blast Finals Day in full as they usually would.

”

I was listening abroad so I know the answer to this! First, Dan Norcross did the whole of the second semi with Charles Dagnall, but the other games were covered by Howells and Dagnall (Daggers made the point of saying 'for the first time commentating today Dan Norcross' when I started listening to the second semi). Second, when the Rugby League came on they switched to an online only feed until the conclusion of the Challenge Cup final.

I did think that BBC 5 Live Sports extra have made a bad decision for the current round of County Championship matches taking place as they have Yorkshire v Somerset as their main game. Yorkshire have pretty much won the Championship but can't win it mathematical until next week so what's the point in doing this game over Worcestershire v Sussex which is for sure the most important match of this round of games.

Some interesting points there Difference. I generally agree with you that the Challenge Cup should take priority over premier league football but for whatever reason they ended up with the right result, a surprise Chelsea loss and a sadly one sided Challenge Cup final.

My presumption is they thought the Leeds win more than likely and decided to relegate it, I hope this is a one-off though, especially if it clashes with T20 Blast Finals Day again next year.

My other theory was they ran out of rugby league commentators? With Dave Woods on BBC1 and George Riley on Football League Tonight duties it was a shame that Stuart Pyke was away covering the darts and missing his first Challenge Cup final for 20 years.

For anyone who didn't know BBC Sport's Matt Newsum was the 5LSE commentator, he has commentated on the Super League show this season and I think done some local radio stuff. He is more well know as a BBC Sport website writer.

Tulson Tullett presented the coverage and Alistair Yeomans reported for 5Live, first time in a long time that Yeomans has covered RL for 5Live.
