My other theory was they ran out of rugby league commentators? With Dave Woods on BBC1 and George Riley on Football League Tonight duties it was a shame that Stuart Pyke was away covering the darts and missing his first Challenge Cup final for 20 years.

For anyone who didn't know BBC Sport's Matt Newsum was the 5LSE commentator, he has commentated on the Super League show this season and I think done some local radio stuff. He is more well know as a BBC Sport website writer.

Tulson Tullett presented the coverage and Alistair Yeomans reported for 5Live, first time in a long time that Yeomans has covered RL for 5Live.”

Thanks for the information guys. Matt Newsum is a rugby league commentator and reporter for BBC Radio Leeds so I guess he was a logical choice for the Challenge Cup Final with all of 5LSE's regulars working elsewhere. Was Tulson Tollett on co-commentary duty as well as presenting?

I didn't hear any of the actual commentary, they had a summeriser who I can't remember now, one of the super league coaches but not sure if Tulson chipped in or not.

I don't mind Dan Norcross on the county coverage but he seems to have jumped the queue a bit getting an ODI, surely Kevin Howells should have been commentating rather than reporting for 5Live.

I agree. I also think that Charles Dagnall has jumped the queue. I would also like to hear some of the BBC local radio commentators used. If Dagnall wasn't an ex player there would no way he would be used.

Monday 7th September - ESPN Radio

John Brickley (early game) and Kevin Winter (later game) presented Baseball Tonight from Bristol, Connecticut

Major League Baseball: National League
Chicago Cubs @ St. Louis Cardinals - Jon Sciambi and Chris Singleton (2pm ET commentary)

Major League Baseball: Interleague
Los Angeles Dodgers @ Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim - Roxy Bernstein and Jim Bowden (9pm ET commentary)

ESPN Radio had a doubleheader on Monday as it was Labor Day (to use the local spelling) in the USA and Canada. Over the weekend, ESPN Radio covered the Pittsburgh Pirates @ St. Louis Cardinals series - Sciambi and Singleton commentating on the Saturday night game, with Tom Hart joining Singy for Sunday Night Baseball (as Boog was filling in for Dan Shulman on ESPN TV). John Ryder (Saturday) and Kevin Winter (Sunday) were the studio hosts.

While they don't have a midweek game this week due to the Labor Day doubleheader, ESPN Radio have started to broadcast weeknight games as they always do during the last month to six weeks of the regular season. The additional midweek coverage is at least partially due the start of the American football season, which means that many of ESPN Radio's local affiliate stations are unable to broadcast the Saturday Game of the Week in September due to them carrying local or national college football coverage, with some stations also carrying the NFL's Sunday Night Football ahead of Sunday Night Baseball either regularly or occasionally.

I'm not a huge fan of Dagnall (much prefer Mark Church/Kevin Hand) but I think you are being unfair here. Dagnall did years of commentary for BBC Leicester's cricket coverage, he was a local radio commentator.

If anyone jumped the queue it was Ed Smith. He went from being a summariser in a few meaningless ODIs in 2011 to doing ball-by-ball on home England internationals in 2012 (only having done one other ball-by-ball commentary) before Alison Mitchell (longtime reporter and commentator) had even done a home ODI series.

Yeah I agree with that, Ed Smith certainly did jump the queue, as you point out Dagnell came through local radio. I wasn't sure about Ed Smith at first but I think his promotion was a good one and he fits in well in the main test match team.

I was traveling through the Midlands yesterday and as usual whne I travel long distances, I was tuning around to find out what I could receive. I noticed that Radio Derby had Derbyshire's County Championship match on AM. Have they been doing that all season, or was it a particularly important match?

If Radio Derby can do this, why can't any of the Yorkshire stations cover at the very least, the T20 matches?

BBC Radio Derby air all/most Derbyshire matches on AM I believe - I guess the odd T20 Blast evening match might get an FM airing, and obviously they'll make way for football when Derby County and Burton Albion are playing at the same time during the cricket season.

BBC Radio Derby aren't alone on employing their AM platforms for cricket commentaries - BBC Radio Solent (Hampshire), BBC Hereford & Worcester and BBC Radio Somerset also do this and I think BBC Radio Gloucestershire do so at least occasionally. There might be a few other provincial county stations that still have AM frequencies which I've missed out who also do this. The BBC Local Radio stations covering big cities (and Radio Wales) don't tend to do this as far as I'm aware though.

I listened to BBC Radio 5 Live Sports Extra's coverage of the final day of the season from the lunch break onwards - they stuck with Yorkshire v Sussex to its conclusion, not just to confirm Sussex's relegation but in order for Dave Callaghan to describe Yorkshire's trophy presentation.

After the celebrations had died down, they switched to Surrey v Northamptonshire, with them being on-air as Surrey clinched the Division Two title. They took the trophy presentation from there too - with Mark Church doing their final sign-off of the season, where he mentioned Johnny Barran (although like you I didn't hear him commentate on this week's match, so perhaps it was more of a general thanks for his work all season). Derbyshire v Leicestershire was the only game still going on at this point, so I switched to that online feed and listened to the very end - Iain O'Brien did the final link of the county cricket season!

Just to conclude with a thanks to you Connor for all the effort you put into compiling the various county cricket commentary teams over the course of the summer. Having picked up the baton once or twice, I appreciate how much hard work goes into it and I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds these posts valuable.
