If you are a Vegetarian or a Vegan and you're reading this post. Please click the link and watch the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7KeRwdIH04
Do this before reading this post. Also try to ignore the annoying tone Michael Greger uses. I think he does this to provoke a reaction to people with preconceived ideas about the subject matter and their own health. Which is very clever, in a way.
15 years ago I became a vegetarian. One day I was eating meat and the next I wasn't. Back then the internet wasn't what it is now. The information I needed wasn't as readily available and I was still very young and living the coke, ketamine, LSD, ecstasy weekend lifestyle of my peers. In short I wasn't ready for the sea change in my eating habits.
The first thing I noticed was my huge drop in energy levels. This was never really addressed until 6 years ago when I started to cook properly for myself and use soya mince. Even then this was only a half way house to the vitality I use to enjoy.
A few years ago I gave up throwing large quantities of butter on my food (I would go through a 500g tub in less than 2 weeks). This was clogging my arteries and was causing shortness of breath. It was so bad I would get severe cramp in my legs if I tried to lift them. I never noticed the cause of this until someone said in passing they thought I used too much butter in my food.
I thought about it and stopped using it. The cramps disappeared as a result although the shortness of breath persisted. My breathing problems were with me prior to the butter indulgence. In fact they were so bad I had to sleep with a window open and my mouth open while sleeping or risk waking up with severe headaches.
This triggered a neurosis. I would have deep and prolonged anxiety about the silliest things.
Another of my bad eating habits was chocolate. I use to eat this stuff by the truck load. A couple of months ago I read chocolate had caffeine in it. I realised caffeine must be the root cause of my irritable bowel symptoms, so I cut back drastically and sure enough the symptoms went away.
A couple of days ago I saw the video posted in the link and decided to buy ground flax seeds. Within 24 hours of consuming them my shortness of breath had disappeared and the neurosis with it.
I realise this is an extraordinary claim, but I have lived with it for so long, I can recognise it's absence.
The up side of this is I don't feel tired or run down all the time. I feel as though my energy levels are back to their pre vegetarian levels.
It is no overstatement to say this video and the flax seeds have changed my life.
For any who may identify with my story I hope this can provide a remedy if not some comfort.
