Speakers making popping sounds
Funk You

Not sure if this is the right place to put this as there isn't really a part of the forum that deals with sound but thought I'd ask anyway....

I was testing out my amp today and it was going well, I didnt have the sound up full only half way. All of a sudden the speakers made this loud popping noise! no music came through and it just constantly made this popping noise. I switched the amp off and turned it back on again, still the speakers make the noise. I turned the sound down to zero and put the amp on again and it was the same results I thought maybe it was the soundcard on my laptop? nope! so i think I must have blown the speakers.

Some friends think I've popped a tweeter others think something inside with the mechanism has failed. I thought I'd ask here see what you guys can suggest. I am flat broke and cant afford to replace them and I have a wedding to do this Saturday and therefore need them.

If it's making any noises with the amp turned right down, then it's the amp that's at fault - doesn't matter what's wrong with the speakers, they can't make any noises unless the amp feeds them a signal.

Speakers could be dead as well - either the duff amp might have killed the speakers, or duff speakers might have killed the amp.

Do you have some alternative means of driving the speakers, eg another amp or a friend or family member with one you could try them on?

When speakers go they usually go out with a whimper rather than a bang. In other words you only notice a drive unit has gone in the speaker because the sound quality changes rather than there being any audible popping or banging. That is more likely to be an amplifier issue.

Hence trying the speakers on a different amp. That will tell you if they work or not. Problem is if they don't work you won't know if it's the amp that made the speakers pop or the speakers just going of their own accord.

If you have an old rubbish pair of speakers you don't mind damaging you could try those on the amp to see if you still get pops and bangs (indicating an amp fault) or it all sounds OK.

I havent another amp or any other speakers only speakers I have are ones for my stereo but they are wires and not ones you plug in and I dont want to blow them as had them for 12 years.

These ones are from Maplins and I guess I should have expected it to be crap!! some friends reckon I have blown a tweeter and others think a mechanism has gone in them. When they were making the popping sound the sub inside the speaker was banging hard really kicking out even though no music was playing through it. My amp I have actually had problems with and I have since fitted a fan to the back of it which is powered by plug, I was testing it with the fan (that I just clipped on the grill) because when I did gigs the amp would trip out due to it getting hot (no fan on it) so you reckon to combat one problem Ive made another? I cant seem to win!

I have asked a mate if they can help so far no reply but am mildly freaking my noggin as need all this equipment for Saturday!

Make and model of amp and speakers would help.

Speakers are passive devices they cannot do anything without something generating a voltage to make the coil in the drive unit move backwards and forwards. So if the bass speaker was moving violently in and out that implies the amplifier was sending it some sort of signal to cause that.

Amp is ProSound N73HH and speakers are ProSound 100w 8 inch speakers

A 100W amp should not be overheating regularly, even without any form of cooling fan. That tends to suggest the amp is faulty. Or has been abused.

I rather suspect the amp has blown the speakers as a result of it failing. If you are very lucky the speakers may have survived the abuse thrown at them by the amp but my money is very much on a failed amp.

Would not be at all surprised that if you took the amp apart you would find a number of components looking a bit the worse for wear inside. Common faults would be cheap and nasty electrolytic capacitors that have degraded, (visible signs are bulging tops and/or leaking), especially in the power supply.

Whether it is fixable economically is another matter. With a lot of kit at this price level by the time a service engineer has opened his tool kit and taken to top off the unit you've already clocked up more labour cost than the thing is worth! Often cheaper to throw it away and buy a new one.

I simply haven't the money to even repair them! so will chucking the whole lot! useless piece of shite!

Having looked at ProSound on the net it seems I'm not the only one having issues. Ive managed to get another DJ sorted for Saturday and had to explain whats gone on which is highly embarrassing! I won't be dong weddings for a long while I don't think until I have the money to replace everything. I'll stick to rave parties where I play out on a proper system so that I dont have the worry.

I think once Im earning I may return to this sort of mobile DJing but at the moment cheap gear is all I can afford and obviously its just not cutting it so may as well stick to doing radio, raves etc just easier and less hassle.
