Its the same locally for me with O2, great 2G coverage, but if I wanted 3G I would have to drive about 9 miles just to get on the border of "Outdoor Coverage", I stayed with them for three years - strung along by empty promises about all of the huge investment they were planning and how their roll out would bring 3G to the area, that was two years ago, and guess what - nothing has changed.
I suspect you'll be waiting a similar period for Three to improve their coverage (if they ever do at all), so why worry?. Find a better deal with another network that meets your personal requirements and expectations and sign up to it.”
I had the same problem with Vodafone. For years I was promised this roll out of great 3G, and before that O2. No noticeable improvements.
In fairness, I wouldn't judge three by the standards of the legacy networks - three do actually tell you they are going to improve something, and in most cases, actually do it. Like with 3.5G and now 4G - they said it was coming to my area of Brum earlier in the year, and it has. You can't ask any more than that.
