Hand it in to the police.
When no one's clamed it after a month, it's legaly your's so you just phone the network the phones registered on, and they have to un black list it.

I only know this cause I found a phone that was black listed, and got to keep it and virgin had to un block it.

So untrue. The police would never do that.

If no-one claims lost property, then the finder can keep it - I'm not sure about the time period though.

However - if the phone is blocked, then the network will almost definately have contact details for the person that lost it and barred it.

If its block you can have it unblocked and then sell it on ebay, or just sell it on ebay, if you hand it in to tha pigs they will probly end up selling at some police auction in 3 years time,

I know they do it with other items, but with mobile phones - no.

A mobile phone's no different - except these days, the chances of it being unable to find the owner are slim to none.

Just remember before anyone does this that to get around the network's blocking methods normally means changing the phone's IMEI number and under current Uk law this is illegal and you could end up with a custodial sentence of up to five years!

This may seem harsh, but the law was changed to deter people from stealing phones and to cut insurance fraud etc. as the mobile phone crime and violent mobile phone crimes were rising at an alarming rate.

Do the honest thing, hand it in.

My sister in law found a mobile on the train last year and brought it to our house as she was visiting us. I was going to take it to the Police station, but realised that the phone was an Orange phone. I called Orange customer services and was told that they couldn't give me any details of the owner, but that they could take my details and pass them on to the owner if I was happy to do this, although they stated it was 100% my choice to hand my details over or not.

I agreed and passed my mobile number to Orange and in turn they gave it to the registered owner of the phone.

The phone turned out to be a young boy's pay as you go phone that he had for his birthday some months previous and he was gutted to have lost it. His Dad called me and thanked me for being honest etc. and I got his mailing address and forwarded it to them. It only cost a couple of quid and a jiffy bag and he offered to reimburse me of any expense that I had to go through to get the phone back to them.

Had I have kept the phone it would have been wrong and illegal. Sending the phone back wasn't just the right thing to do, but it also cheered the young lad up.

You could do this, or you could just take it to the Police station and remember to get a receipt for handing it in, but imagine how happy the owner will be when it returns to them.

You have to remember not everyone in life is like the above user, some people dont give a monkeys.

9 times out of 10 people will keep the phone, use it, or sell it.

I would hand it back to The Taxi company....I know Orange cant do anything due to DPA and It wont work With a foreign SIM its totally barred, and with it been an orange branded phone it is locked to the network anyway. I take it that he hasnt saved his phonebook on the Memory card?

I wouldn't do this, not with the companies that operate around my area anyway. Don't trust them enough.

Orange will take your details (either all or just a contact number or email) and pass them on to the owner if you give them permission to do so.

The best thing is still drop it in at a Police station and get a receipt for it.

It will work with foreign SIMs in foreign countries

Basically the phone can be used anywhere outside the UK

Which is why a lot of stolen phones from the UK end up being sold abroad. It's a market that even IMEI blocking doesn't stop and it means that thieves can still get money for their stolen phones unfortunately.
