All mobile phone network operators in the UK will disable the phone by reference to the unique IMEI number of the handset. This means that the handset itself (not just the SIM card which can easily be swapped) will be barred and will be unusable on any network, even if a new SIM card is inserted.

Government website, notice how it only says "UK"

Heres another

The National Mobile Phone Register is being launched on 12 January 2005, supported by the mobile phone industry, the National Mobile Phone Crime Unit, the Metropolitan Police and other UK Police Forces, and the Home Office.

Notice how no other government in the world is mentioned

Something strange is going on there....Cause I work for Orange and anyphone that has been barred is blocked worldwide....the only way to unblock it is if you change the IMEI, which is illegal...if thats not the case then we need some major trainging at work

Nothing strange is going on, this is reality. Show me the worldwide system that does it and the international agreement

You think countries in africa have the technology for that?

No

IF you still feel like reading some more

The criminals do have an alternative to changing IMEI's, and this is to send the barred handsets overseas! The blacklist database (or CEIR) is only used by the UK networks. Therefore a handset that is barred in the UK will work fine in a different country! Apparently a large number of UK barred handsets find themselves in Italy, Spain and France etc.. The Barred handset works fine in any country outside the UK!!

Are you sure you work for Orange

Orange, along with all other UK networks, share information on a single database, so once a phone is reported stolen or lost, it is blocked across all UK networks, making it useless even if the SIM Card has been changed.

Think you'll find that the database referred to is the CEIR, which is accessible to all networks worldwide, the problem is not all networks have their own EIR installed so they can't access information from the CEIR.

When I sent out a phone for an Orange customer, Orange never sent me a jiffy bag, they left me to it.

I'm not moaning about the lack of free jiffy bag, they aren't expensive, but just wondering if they actually did this.

If they blocked the IMEI this won't work and even if it did it would be stealing upon finding.

Don't be tempted, it's just wrong.

yea but still, at the end of the day the person who has lost it would have gotten over it by now. so.... i know its wrong but as the saying goes "another mans loss is another mans gain"
