I think James is being clever, he prob thinks he needs to keep the arguments going (to keep himself in the spotlight) because despite the boos and chants he's getting, he's still there. So even though he'd prob prefer cheers from the crowd, he knows he can keep on doing what he's done in there as what's he's done so far has not cost him his place.

Why shouldn't James say that if it is true?

I actually want Gary to win but James would have preferred it if Gary went (I'm obviously glad he didn't) but Gary was the one who started the rude comments as James and a few others were upset their mate went (I'm glad he did so boring!)
