Eastenders- Too much 'daytime'?
MrAndrew
12-09-2014
Maybe it's just me, but I think it adds a real atmosphere to EastEnders having episodes, sometimes for the entire week, set entirely during the night hours. So why does that seem to be a rarity these days, with most stuff taking place during the day?. If anything I'd much rather have minimal daytime, rather than the opposite!

Rainie's story is a prime example, it has all taken place like mid-day out in the open ( ) when the story would carry much more weight and loneliness if she was out in the dark, when everyone else is in bed. I know it probably seems like a silly, unimportant thing, but I dunno, there are some grim storylines going on, but they don't come across as 'grim' because it usually always takes place in the safe, warm sunshine, with a square full of people and chatter...

Does anyone else feel like this, or know if there is a reason why there is a lack of night-based stuff?

Hallelujah! I completely agree with this! EastEnders is automatically better at night! Normally they have a good few night time episodes throughout the summer, which is something these past few years have lacked. We've got a lot of night shoots coming up soon though, by the looks of it

I love EastEnders in the nighttime, but the main reason for the excessive amount of daytime scenes is because there are a lot less nighttime hours to film in in the Summer - It happens every year. Notice they made the night-scenes go until May-time, but by June they just didn't have enought nighttime to film in.

There will be more night scenes over the winter

You say it seems silly well not at all! I agree. I love watching episodes set at night! It adds so much to the scene. After all when a horror story starts it doesn't start with, 'one sunny summer morning...' It starts off with, 'one dark stormy night...'. We wouldn't feel it like when scenes are set in the day if would suit might to give it the feeling.

That said it would be nice to have a episode set on a stormy might we never seem to get episodes with lighting and thunder while something's happening.

I did like Hollyoaks Later series 3 as that was set over a night and the last two episodes where set the next morning. It really felt like the next morning as so much happened on the night that ran into the morning. It had the atmosphere of the morning after a big night (like a Saturday morning after a big Friday might).

It's a practical thing, as Mr James noted these current episodes would have been filmed over the summer - ie when there is a lot more daylight. In a few weeks time we will start to see more nighttime episodes.

Yes, but I hope some things happen at night. I understand that the Slater fire had to happen in the day because Alfie thought the house was clear and they need people to notice the burning house, but it looks like whoever gets shot is also going to happen in the day time. I couldn't tell whether when Dean came onto Linda it was night time or day time through the blinds, but it will ruin the atmosphere if it's in day time imo.

The lack of night shoots isn't something that's just happened over the summer. It's a cost saving measure. This is why they rarely set episodes at night, unless they really have to.

It's not just EE, either. I've noticed ED doesn't film as much at night as it used to, and HO doesn't have that many episodes set at night (usually a couple of scenes at most). Even though a day can continue over several episodes, night time doesn't feature.

I think as dark nights come they will.

I think its awful when they do night episodes in summer and its sunny outside

Nobody likes doing nightshoots, especially in the summer when it gets dark at around 10pm. As someone said, when winters hits, you'll have plenty of EE exterior scenes.
