I want to convert some of my DVDs (I used my dvd recorder to copy from tv - NOT illegal recording) and I use DVD+RWs which I want to use again, so I copy to my computer and then convert from there, is there a software bearing in mind that sometimes the dvd is split into .99gb size files and the movies sometimes overlap each other ie one movies ends and another starts while in the same file size.

Try MakeMKV which is effectively free.
This should read the dvd and output separate mkv files for each film.
Depending upon the way the disc is authored there is a possibility that it will only see one film and output one joined file which will then need to be split. (Separate problem).

Actually it is illegal. Recording of TV programmes to watch at a later time is allowed under copyright law. Keeping those recordings for repeated viewing is not.
From the 1st October, if the government get round to OK'ing it, it will be legal to make copies of commercial recordings for personal use. But as far as I can see that does not apply to recordings made of TV programmes.
Then again the chances of the rozzers bashing your door in and carting you off to the nick are about equal to your chances of winning the lottery jackpot without a ticket.

I have downloaded MakeMKV and I really enjoy using it as it is quick and hassle free, hopefully I will save a few "bob" on buying discs, you mentioned that I might need to separate the movies (I am asking for future) but what could I use to split these if I need to, its just there is a lot of "splitters" but I just wanted to know what YOU used, as I feel I could trust you on this issue, but thanks a lot for informing me off MakeMKV

I only mentioned the possible need to split files because in the past I have used a variety of dvd authoring software and makeMKV wasn't able to separate some files presumably because the authoring software uses a different way of informing the playback equipment. If your discs were recorded in a consistent manner then it looks like you won't have a problem.
When I needed to split the file I used video editing software to identify where the frame changeover point was and created separate files. I paid for this software but there are free programmes available that will do the job but not ones I use and could therefore recommend. As I said, a separate problem.

I really should pass on this. I bought software capable of handling HD video as well as SD and it has been a while since I made this change. I use VideoReDo which, whilst I think is still available as a cheaper SD only version, I would say that it is way over the top for you - I take out any ads and trim the start and finish. Before that I used Womble but changed from that because it was slow in changing to HD. I wonder whether Windows' Live Movie Maker might do the job if required.

As I have said it will only be bought if I need to buy it but I am so chuffed with the speed the savings I will make with using MakeMKV I would be happy to pay for a splitter, but I forgot Windows Live Movie Maker, but thanks again bbuk
