I really should pass on this. I bought software capable of handling HD video as well as SD and it has been a while since I made this change. I use VideoReDo which, whilst I think is still available as a cheaper SD only version, I would say that it is way over the top for you - I take out any ads and trim the start and finish. Before that I used Womble but changed from that because it was slow in changing to HD. I wonder whether Windows' Live Movie Maker might do the job if required.
VideoReDo and Womble do trial versions: I'd wait to see if you have a problem.
