I may be wide of the mark here, and I am sure someone will put me right here, but can you go on BB with a criminal record? I thought it was a no-no? (I know there's a problem on X Factor.) If so, how come Dee has been able to go on there?

I can only speak about civilian BB. In all the audition process I paid for all the train fares, travel, accommodation, meals etc etc.......but the one thing BB insisted they paid for was the Criminal record thingy. I think it was £10 and I got it myself from a nearby police station. From what I knew of the other BB people I met, those on BB8 and others, I was probably in the minority of not being 'known' to the police. They still let me on though.

I wonder why they insisted on paying for it yet allowed you to go and get it.

I don't understand this - you have to send off for these checks and they cost quite considerably more than a tenner. My partner's a carer and he had to get one. It took about 4 weeks and was around £40 I think.

I think there are different levels of checking depending on what it is required for.

That's because who ever did the search has taken a commission. I used to work for a company where our staff worked in schools and needed CRB checks. Initially we paid to have them done then the boss realised it was a nice little earner and we did our own and sold the service to others. We charged £35. It didn't cost that to do the searches because the staff were already on the payroll. I have seen tem cost up to £70. It really does pay to shop around.

I would assume the CRB would be to make sure there was no outstanding warrant's or anything huge like Murder.

There have been people in the house with criminal records before

I 've just checked there are now three levels with fees from £26-£44.

The basic check is in respect of any convictions or cautions etc. I would hope BB would bar anyone with a history of any violence.

You're allowed to go on TV with any kind of record if they want you; it's just that the producers need to know exactly what your criminal history is. They don't want it to come out later than their "happy-go-lucky nice guy" has a sexual harassment conviction they hadn't told them about.

Probably because the legal system, and the social system, in this country is meant to be that you pay your crime and do your time, then you start afresh. We accept that some BB housemates are former drug addicts , hardly of strong moral character in other words if one is going around judging the housemates, but they are reformed and therefore forgiven (for want of a better word). The same should apply to anybody who has paid for their crime.

In society you are supposed to pay for your crime and then be able to move on in life, find work and become a productive member of society - I know that this really isn't the case as many people tend to look down on others with a record, many employers do too.

It's interesting that Lesley has said they were CRB checked.

Yeah, it's just that, I know there has been a couple of occasions on X Factor when something has come out of the woodwork at a late stage and the contestants have been removed.

I went to our local police station (now demolished but not, I think, as a direct result) and got the form which I filled in and took to Cirencester police station who subsequently sent me a certificate within a week. I was charged £10 which BB gave to me in cash when I went to the next part of the audition.

I'd imagine you're still allowed on with a criminal record; its just they want to know what you've done.

For example, if you were caught underage drinking 10 years ago, they probably wouldn't care, whereas if you'd committed murder they might think twice.
