Some of them would benefit from reading this.

What do you see, nurses, what do you see?
Are you thinking, when you look at me –
A crabby old woman, not very wise,
Uncertain of habit, with far-away eyes,
Who dribbles her food and makes no reply,
When you say in a loud voice — “I do wish you’d try.”

Who seems not to notice the things that you do,
And forever is losing a stocking or shoe,
Who unresisting or not, lets you do as you will,
With bathing and feeding, the long day to fill.
Is that what you’re thinking, is that what you see?
Then open your eyes, nurse, you’re looking at ME…
I’ll tell you who I am, as I sit here so still;
As I rise at your bidding, as I eat at your will.

I’m a small child of ten with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters, who love one another,
A young girl of sixteen with wings on her feet.
Dreaming that soon now a lover she’ll meet;
A bride soon at twenty — my heart gives a leap,
Remembering the vows that I promised to keep;
At twenty-five now I have young of my own,
Who need me to build a secure, happy home;
A woman of thirty, my young now grow fast,
Bound to each other with ties that should last;
At forty, my young sons have grown and are gone,
But my man’s beside me to see I don’t mourn;
At fifty once more babies play ’round my knee,
Again we know children, my loved one and me.

Dark days are upon me, my husband is dead,
I look at the future, I shudder with dread,
For my young are all rearing young of their own,
And I think of the years and the love that I’ve known;
I’m an old woman now and nature is cruel –
‘Tis her jest to make old age look like a fool.

The body is crumbled, grace and vigor depart,
There is now a stone where once I had a heart,
But inside this old carcass a young girl still dwells,
And now and again my battered heart swells.

I remember the joys, I remember the pain,
And I’m loving and living life over again,
I think of the years, all too few — gone too fast,
And accept the stark fact that nothing can last –
So I open your eyes, nurses, open and see,
Not a crabby old woman, look closer, nurses — see ME!

that is so moving, and so true-

no wonder we are all worried about how we will be treated when we are old - lucky gary isn't vulnerable and he can cope -
but seemingly, if you are old - you are seen as dirty, because you aren't as groomed or vain, you are seen as a has been, of no worth, we know he showers every day, they complain he is naked in the bathroom, and james takes him every day to shower??
you are seen as having to "earn respect" never mind you deserve respect for having lived life - and yet youngsters demand respect form strangers or they are being Dissed - what does that say for carers who don't know the elderly people they look after?

I look at gary and I see someone who has had a long and difficult life at times, great adventure an experiences at times, who has earnt respect by the charity work he does alone, has been a vital young man in more ways than George or James et all could ever aspire to - he has earnt the right, as most older people to be a bit short, or grumpy- a lot of youngsters living it up now will be best remembering they will be old, and then will know how grumpy it can make you, when you know youth has gone, and your body is letting you down - yet inside you don't feel old - I do hope they will watch and see how this has come across, and wonder if this is how they want to be treated, or if their own parent s are being treated or could be treated like this by people who do not know them, and couldn't care less because they are old

It is worrying to see younger people have no respect, tolerance or empathy , and bearing in mind these are so called celebs..what was said on BBOTS - ..people we celebrate

This BB has been very uncomfortable to watch, so much that I haven't been able to watch it for the past few days. I really don't care who wins as I do not vote, but I just hope it is not anyone who has behaved so badly.

I watch for entertainment and this series has been the opposite. It promised so much at the beginning, but nastiness and intolerance seem to be fashionable.

Thank you for posting this. No doubt these people will never see this (unless they have facebook pages, in which case, I will gladly copy and paste there! However folks such as Dee and Gary have no depth of emotion, no empathy, they are what I call shallow. Shallow of mind, shallow of feeling, shallow of understanding so if they were ever to read this beautiful piece, they would probably just snigger, sadly.
