How long does homemade ice cream last?

As the thread title says, how long does homemade ice cream last for? I like making ice cream and often make it to go with a particular dessert but always end up with far too much. I then end up forgetting about it and don't go in the freezer for a month or so and then the next time I go in the freezer I spot it. I'm never sure if it'll be OK and how long it'll actually stay OK for.

It won't be unfit for eating if thats what you're worried about so it'll be quite safe to try it.
Sorbet quite quickly goes sort of mushy so does need eating up quick. Ice cream should last a month or so but will eventually start to crystallize out.
