BBC iPlayer and Android KitKat 4.4.4.
Y Me

Does anybody on here know the cause of the problem with the BBC iPlayer and the latest Android KitKat version 4.4.4?

I can find nothing of any consequence on google and the BBC website offers wishy - washy advice.

All I would like to know is what is the problem and why don't the other "players" have the same problem.

From the BBC iPlayer website.

Quote:
“Android – 4.4 (KitKat) device displaying black or frozen screen

***Updated 19 August 2014***

We’re aware of a couple of issues affecting Android 4 KitKat users in regards to playing programmes.

1. Video remaining as a black screen but with audio continuing. This is affecting all versions of Android 4.4.

If you get a frozen or black screen, you can usually fix it by pressing the back button to the programme information page, then tapping play again.

2. Playback starts to degrade after about 15 minutes of continuous normal playback of a downloaded programme. This issue is specific to Android version 4.4.3 and 4.4.4.

These issues have not been fixed in the latest app update (version 4.2.0.100), however we are continuing to assist Google to resolve these problems.

Please be sure to accept future upgrades to your BBC iPlayer app and Android firmware so any fixes can take effect.”

Not much you can do at the moment it seems.

I think that's why it's best not to have nexus devices sometimes. By the time my Samsung devices get updated all the bugs have been resolved.

I wish there was a degree of honesty about what has gone wrong. As I asked in my original post what have other tv players got that the BBC hasn't? After all you can save programmes on 4OD and play them back with no problem.

How would the BBC know what other players do and don't have?

Nothing to do wit honesty.

it is weird and has been affecting my nexus7 for 6 weeks or so. They seem to be in no hurry to sort the problem. I had bought the nexus as I have a chromecast and wanted to use it for that.
My Kindle Fire has no problem, and I can't think it will have anything 'more' than the nexus,

So none of the big players reverse engineer the rivals offerings then?
