I've been fascinated by the recent omni-rumors circulating around about this supposed "big shift" Corrie is soon to face. Personally, I'm unsure of what to believe, but some of it sounds really interesting. It's about time, it's just been going round and round for years now- something had to give, and this could be it.
1) The production team are going to take the opportunity to build more of the set, owing to the increased level of space open to them. As well as new streets, houses and families, Corrie will also play host to a brand new factory, behind the viaduct, which will be a rival to Underworld.
2) For health and safety reasons, it has been ruled that the cobbles will be removed by the middle of 2015, so as to provide the actors with a safer environment to work on. An insider claimed that "After 54 years, we;'ll be sorry to see the cobbles go. However, the safety of our crew and cast always comes first, and we are currently devising a story by which tarmac will be laid across the historic street."
3) Actress Paula Lane will, as we already knew, bow out to take maternity leave later this year- however, in actual fact, this could well be a permanent departure for the actress, who wishes to raise her child beyond the maternity leave. However, the character of Kylie WILL return in late 2015, portrayed by the relatively known actress, Shefali Chowdhury.
4) After much consideration, it has been ruled that the Windass/Armstrong clan will buy the Rovers Return, after Pat Phelan returns and, remorseful for his actions, reimburses Owen Armstrong for every penny. This gives the opportunity to move the Sharif family onto the street, securing them a long term place in the show.
5) Viewers will finally see the show brought out of it's bubble, and new filming procedures will make it possible for current affairs to be discussed by the characters. In a story to air at the General Election next year, Gail will be revealed to be BNP supporter, much to the dismay of her new neighbors, the Nazir's. In a storyline to rival the mammoth Peter/Carla/Leanne saga, which played out for nearly four years, if not more, the two neighbors will embark on a vicious campaign against each other, changing the tone of the show forever.
6) The producers have been keen for heavy cutbacks on comedy, stating "Corrie is not a comedy, it's a gritty, urban and realistic interpretation of our world today. Laughter, happiness and sloth have little place in our society, and viewers can look forward to a Corrie which everyone can take a lot more seriously."
7) In a bit to make Corrie more inclusive of it's audience, the attractive female characters of Corrie will have very regular scenes featuring close up's of their bare feet, hands and various other parts of their bodies, in order to provide incentive for those with fetishes to follow the show. Former producer Bryan Kirkwood praised this decision, stating "Corrie needs to address it's falling ratings, and it's only right that the show should make the effort to attract a wider audience."
8) In relation to point 5, the surgery will be withdrawn from the show following NHS cuts, and converted into a John Lewis, who will become the show's new sponsor in September of next year. This two story complex will cast a huge shadow over the street, and will add to the tense new dark atmosphere that the show hopes to convey.
9) A new team of writers will take over. The current producer was originally going to be replaced also, but after a short meeting with a leading ITV executive, this decision has been reversed. The executive in question proved unavailable for comment, and is currently on holiday following a large windfall of cash. Elsewhere, newly recruited writer Anthony Horowitz says that he looks forward to bringing the show forward into a "new era of gritty, realistic storytelling."
10) Seventeen cast members will be axed, in a bid to shake up the current character pool.
