It was a very telling episode with lots of plot development and a look into the Dr's pysche. And it was wonderfully scary, both from a visual point of view with the glimpse of the 'thing on top of the bad' as well as the knocking on the door and the being grabbed by something under the bed...a lot of psychological scariness that will keep the scariness going for ages...it isn't just about a scare in the show but having it carry on after the show.
The plot:
the Dr wonders whether there are creatures we cannot see but 'lurk' around us.
Dr uses Clara's experience to try to discover whether creatures exist.
They end up in Danny's past due to phone call.
They realise there are creatures around us - the story doesn't show us what they are because it would reduce the scariness for kids lying in bed wondering what is under their beds (a wonderful conceit).
The Dr tries to work out why they ended up where 'the kid' was and not Clara.
They end up at the end of time with somehting knocking outside the door...the thing that is following Danny's relative.
Clara uses the telepathic interface and the TARDIS takes them back to where the Dr first had the leg grab experience.
We find out that
a) he doesn't want to be in the army (but he actually becomes one of the greatest and most dangerous warriors in history)
b) he nearly didn't make it as a Time Lord...which probably explains why he doesn't toe the line.
c) he has never had 'that' dream that everyone else has had...and hence is there nothing following him?
d) he is as scared as we all are deep down.
e) the mirror of Danny not wanting to be a soldier who kills and the Dr who, after killing for so long and now realising the TimeLords are alive, is trying to move away from being someone who destroys (or something along those lines).
