Shane Richie: "Keep Alfie and Kat together"...
The actor’s character is about to set fire to his home in an insurance scam without *realising Kat is inside.
As we revealed earlier this month, she will suffer horrific scars but has no idea her husband was *behind the arson attack. The plot will test the couple’s relationship but bosses are keeping tight-lipped about when Kat finds out that it was Alfie. Shane, 50, speaking at the TV Choice Awards, said he had considered walking out if Alfie and Kat (Jessie Wallace, 42) were not together. He added: “Kat and Alfie are part of EastEnders. I don’t think Kat on her own works. And I don’t think Alfie on his own works. “Fans liked Den and Angie and they like Kat and Alfie. I can’t think of any other couples in the show’s 30-year history like us. “We’ve carried the torch from Den and Angie for all this time. “It’s a different show now. For a while Kat and Alfie have been put to the sidelines but that’s all about to change.” Speaking about the fire, Shane said: “Filming the fire scenes were really sad because it could well be the end of Kat and Alfie. It has a massive effect on them. “There has been *infidelity, you had their baby die and the baby swap. But this is different. This is two people trying to come to terms with something so big.” Shane joined EastEnders in 2002 and played Alfie for three years before leaving in 2005. The actor, who later returned alongside Jessie in 2010, said that if he was to ever leave then he would like his character to be written out in a way that allowed him to return. He added: “I wouldn’t lose sleep if they killed me off because I can do other stuff – I’ve got a new game show. But I’d rather they didn’t. This show is my pension.” The fire plot, which kicks off tomorrow night, puts Alfie and Kat back in the spotlight in some of the show’s most dramatic scenes this year. Speaking about what it was like to film them, Shane said: “The framework of the house actually caught on fire when it wasn’t meant to. I had no idea it had happened. I didn’t know until they shouted ‘cut’ and ran over with a blanket. We had a fire crew on standby and they dealt with it. “They left that shot in. There are bits you’ll see where the actual door frame has caught fire.” Shane said writers have planned one of their best plots yet in the new year for Alfie and Kat in the run-up to the show’s 30th anniversary in February. He said: “The stuff we’re doing at the moment is the best we’ve ever done. The pay-off, which we start shooting soon, is so good. People really won’t see it coming.” Source: http://www.dailystar.co.uk/showbiz/3...r-Shane-Richie |

I'm sorry but I disagree with Richie when he thinks Kat wouldn't work on her own without Alfie.

“We’ve carried the torch from Den and Angie for all this time." Oh, nob off. Pat and Frank eclipse Kat and Alfie immensely. And Kat works wonderfully on her own. |

The pension comment is arrogant, but I do agree with him re: Kat and Alfie as a pair. Stacey is there for Kat to bounce off, but that was so awful in 2010 that it seems many would sooner they had their separate storylines to avoid any risk of them both regressing. I'm certainly in that camp. Kat can't base the rest of her life around Stacey.
I also don't want Kat's story rehashed by her becoming single again and crying that no one will want her. We had enough repeats of her story in 2010-12. Let one big couple have a happy ending. Kat's looking like she'll be giving Ronnie a run for her money with this storyline; I'm not sure I could stand any more suffering for her after it. There are already enough EastEnders children in broken homes, there don't need to be any more - especially Tommy who has already lost one father if you can call Michael that. He is right when he talks about them as an iconic couple, although the carrying the torch wording is a bit strong. Den and Angie, Kat and Alfie, Pat and Frank, Bianca and Ricky, Pauline and Arthur; they're in a group with only a handful of couples. Just look at the disaster Bianca has been following Sid Owen's departure. |

When I read articles I make sure to remember that the way something is written isn't necessarily the way it would sound if I heard the person speaking. In Richie's case I just can't do that. He ALWAYS comes off like he's got a huge ego. It's actually infuriating that he thinks he's so important to EastEnders. Does he not realise it existed for almost 2 decades before he came along? As for Kat and Alfie being the only couple since Den and Angie, I think Pat and Frank's fans would disagree. Not to mention Ricky and Bianca, Sharon and Grant, Stacey and Bradley, and so on. He really doesn't do himself any favours.

Pmsl!
Good old Shane always makes me laugh! ![]() ![]() ![]() I love his interviews and I agree about his comments about keeping Kat and Alfie together but I think a lot of the other comments are tongue in cheek though, (the Den and Angie one and the EE being his pension one) however he and Kat are an iconic couple imo and he does make me laugh and he always has and is playing a blinder at the moment and I hope he stays in EE for a long time yet! |

Kat worked amazingly on her own actually.
That being said, I don't want them to split up now that they actually have twins. |

I don't want to see Kat bringing up her children alone and I can't imagine her being happy with anyone but Alfie.

I thought Lauren and Joey carried the torch from Den n Angie.
He really doesn't help himself with comments like that. |

Den and Angie to Kat and Alfie is a better comparison than Kat and Alfie to Tyler and Whitney!

![]() ![]() ![]() RIDICULOUS! Kat completely worked on her own before Alfie even appeared! Easily argued that it when when she was at her BEST!ALFIE DOESN'T WORK ON HIS OWN is what Shane is too delusional to see! ![]() “Fans liked Den and Angie and they like Kat and Alfie. I can’t think of any other couples in the show’s 30-year history like us. Eh *cough* *cough* STACEY & BRADLEY! Epic couple. Worked throughout (unlike Kat & Alfie). They are far better. |

Den and Chrissie worked great together and Den also worked great by himself, so who's to say what Kat and/or Alfie could achieve without each other
