IMO I think there is something to Matts quote about how 80% of rapes don't get reported or something like that.

What I take from this is that Dean will get away with it and will carry on living on the street as nothing has happened.

I think there's a chance he could stay. It's interesting because Dean is a popular character and so I don't think they'd write him out unless they had to. This makes me hope they will try and redeem him in some way - maybe he's mentally ill and doesn't know what he has done until afterwards etc.

Either Dean leaves or Linda leaves. Even if the storyline is designed to show that not all rapists go to prison it would be a bit distasteful for Dean and Linda to continue in the show for years with the options of either brushing the rape under the carpet or never letting either character move on from it. One has to go. Either write about a victim coming to terms with rape or the more controversial option of showing a rapist geting away with it while the victim's life is ruined and she leaves. Both can only exist together for a limited time or else it gets murky.

I think the only way they can both stay on the show, not necessarily be in the same scenes though, is if Dean has a breakdown and they explore his mental health. They explain his time in prison and what happened to him and how it's affected him; there's also 6 years worth of things we don't know - maybe something happened before with his behaviour etc. He could be sectioned and then brought back into the Square. Linda could say that she doesn't want to take the case any further due to Dean being ill etc.

If I didn't love Dean, I would say that he needs to go to prison and never come back! However, he's always had so much potential and I'd hate for this to be wasted.

BIB 1 - Is Dean really popular though? I have seen a lot of negative comments about him. The rape storyline may ruin Dean for good,

BIB 2 - He may be "mentally ill" but I would hate it if he uses it as an excuse to rape Linda.

I agree Dean has potential but I'm tired of mental illness being used as a get out of jail free card. It's insulting. He's clearly not so mentally damaged he can't tell right from wrong. What he is, is a control freak who won't stop until he gets his own way. That's what makes him interesting and what makes him dangerous but not in a "lock me up in a padded cell" kind of way.

If Dean were to stay then it would involve Linda forgiving him, which is unlikely but possible, and the rest of the Carters being okay with him being around which is highly unrealistic in my opinion. The other angle is having everyone believe Dean and not Linda but that's a pretty awful message to send out to viewers. Of course the writers could just stop having Dean appear in storylines with The Carters once the rape storyline is resolved but then what's the point of him being in the show?

1 - He's popular on twitter and do you remember how DS was when he was in it before? He's a lot more popular now!

2 - Same here, but like I say I'm trying to think of ways he could stay.
