Do not ever ever say that I'd have bloody Adric back before her.

Lets just leave her bald and in space (To be honest I liked her in Guardians Of The Galaxy proving it was just the character I hated not the actress )

I read Capaldi lives in Crouch End, London so he's not registered/allowed to vote in Scotland, therefore likelihood of him getting a Scottish passport is debatable.

He was born in Scotland, he is Scottish so will be automatically eligible for a passport if they go independent.

No, but I suspect he might be told to tone down the accent as there really is absolutely no need for it.

Well America voted yes and they now fund your quaint TV show.

Imagine it lol, people will be calling for Steven Moffat to be deported every time he writes an episode they don't like.

He's got a great accent though! What do you mean there's no need for it? Besides, why would Scottish independence mean he'd have to tone down his accent? I know Tennant didn't use his real accent, but it would have been fine with me if he had.

Christopher Eccleston sounded northern.
David Tennant sounded quite London-ish.
Matt Smith sounded like an Eton student. (Not moaning, loved 11's general poshness lol)
And Peter Capaldi sounds Scottish.

It's awesome that we've had such a great variation since 2005!

Seeing the xenophobia and nastiness about an accomplished, white male actor from the British Isles playing the Doctor does note bode well for any non-British, non-white, non-male Doctor at any time in the future.

I think you have a good point, I have long thought that however much you make it illegal to be racist or sexist you cant stop people thinking, feeling or being that way.
It takes proper education and for racist views not to be passed on to the next generation for it to finally go!

I am quite happy for Capaldi to have his Scottish accent and even if Scotland vote for independence and Capaldi gets a Scottish passport and is a Scottish citizen, why would it matter if he is still the Doctor?
Personally I would like Scotland to go independent as England would get a better deal, but Im not against Scots or any other countries citizens.

A close call, but here are the results of Scotland's independence votes.

I'm hugely in favour of educating bigotry out of society but you can't even begin to to do until two other things are in place - you have to have a legal/regulatory framework to show that "society" - in its entirely - is opposed to bigots and you need role-models and key-figures to lead by example.

Without the former, there's a risk of creating a backlash - remember when it was revealed that smoking was to be allowed in the bar in the house of commons when it was banned in the pubs used by the rest of us. Without the latter, you risk having people "lead" by a small but prominent minority through social media and "entertainment" mass-coverage. As was said in "True LIes" - "You're not her parents anymore - Madonna and Axel Rose are her parents"

I'd also be extremely wary of passing-off casual racism by saying "It's just a joke" or trying to belittle in advance anyone who takes racism seriously. Many people in Britain have stated that they hated being "nicknamed" as "Chalkie" or "Sam" in the 50's and 60's by "workmates" who would say "Can't pronounce that name - we'll call you Sam". They were afraid to stand up to such blatant disrespect (many came from cultures where "names" were actually important titles combined with revered family names. No-one should ever feel bullied by individuals or peer pressure into accepting or tolerating bigotry.

Surely he would have just carried on running, as per usual?

Of course, in the Whoniverse, Scotland eventually achieves independence and doesn't torture any benevolent space whales in the process.

I agree you do have to have a political frame work to start educating 'bigotry' out but thats where legislation stops, you need the general population to take that up and start saying no to racists too!

You have a good point about people using nicknames, people should be more respectful, personally I havent come across that, instead though I have heard of people from other countries choosing an English name for themselves, this I think is more acceptable, as its the individual's decision and not forced upon them.

The sad thing is that the people around them weren't being intentionally racist and in many ways they were to be applauded for at least making the effort to get some relationship going with immigrants who were often shunned in the street. The "sin" was that they never actually thought to ask the newcomers if they had a preferred form of address and much of that was a general "understanding" that anyone who didn't speak perfect English was uneducated or "slow".

Unfortunately, you really can't educate a population in the way you suggest. Imagine the chaos on the roads if there were no legally enforceable, posted speed-limits and everyone was "educated" to "drive nicely".
