As suspected Apple will limit the use of NFC to Apple Pay only. So file transfers, weblinks on NFC tags, sharing contacts etc wont work on the iPhone 6 or 6 Plus. No public API will be available for developers to use the tech for their own apps. So its typical Apple lockdown.

If this is fact it really is embarrassing that people put up with this nonsense time and time again. Still i suppose to be expected punters can't be trusted with bluetooth why should they be trusted with NFC.

The only sensible thing to do with an iPhone is to jailbreak it due to its many daft restrictions. It will take time to do this with NFC if its even possible at all?!

Or maybe the only sensible thing is not to buy an iPhone in the first place

Anyone who did not see this coming has been living under a rock. Apple have come out and said that NFC will be locked down for at least a year.

I honestly want know what is taking so long for all these MFi controllers to come out. A big reason those aren't going hit of massive is because they going be more than Xbox and PS controllers based on the small amount that are already out. But lot of companies have announced and shown them off but no release date I wonder if Apple is to blame.

So locked down until at least the next model of iPhone comes out ?

Yeah least till then so basically it's useless in Europe at moment hopefully they sort out Apple pay it is a good idea.

Considering it wouldn't take much for the current UK infrastructure to take Apple Pay when it does arrive here as we already have contactless technology on a lot of our card terminals at our shops I can't see it being delayed in arriving here like some other services have

There is a totally different way of looking at this instead of the knee jerk Apple bashing that is going on as usual.
If I had 500 million credit card details at risk, and want to build a reputation for those details being kept secure, I think I would want to lock down the technology that makes the whole thing work as tightly as possible. It seems quite a sensible precaution. Other applications for NFC are simply noise, there is no motivation or need, for Apple to open it up. It has already been accepted on this forum that there are no meaningful applications currently that really require NFC to be in the phone.

But by your logic nobody can create that "killer app" until apple say so ????

Its like preventing WiFi because sometimes you pass card data. Your argument falls over as the one use of NFC that they will allow is the only one that gives access to those 500 million credit cards !!!!

No NFC sharing of photos/videos
No NFC tag use
No NFC reader apps

Its actually pretty probable that some future IOS release WILL allow access to the NFC chip in the API.

You'd hope so. Just seems a little odd to add hardware that only has very limited use.

I guess that's one of the differences between the "apple way" and the "android way".

This is stupid of apple, but nothing new. Why did they even bother to announce NFC? Why not just announce apple pay? Apple pay may use NFC, but since the user cant use it, for anything else, its not a feature of the phone. I guess they were just trying to tick as many boxes as they could. Its what happens when you are playing catchup.

So the iphone 6 and Nexus 4 comparison is wrong, as the iphone 6 doesnt have NFC...hopefully iphone 8 might.

What a daft way to look at it. Google wallet had no security issues and they use NFC payments a lot in the states. I used it here as well on my nexus 4.

And once again, just because YOU do not use apps for NFC does not mean they were just noise. I and many other find it invaluable.

It also was not accepted at all. There was the usual tribal rants from you cp and kid about it being pontless. That was it.

Apple are hobbling this just unlike they have hobbled Bluetooth and have done for years.

Did they???? I watched the launch and I do not recall much (if anything!!!!) being said about NFC - ApplePay WAS the main focus!

The Fingerprint scanner has been "closed" for a while - but it IS now in the API for IOS 8.

I didnt watch the launch, I went to the apple site and looked at the spec sheet for the iphone6. It stated it had NFC, nothing about it being unusable and useless in the UK for sometime yet. It should have stated it was used by apply pay only.

Apple a tech giant worth Billions is really struggling to do what others have had on their phones for years. I don't buy it!

It's not about how much you, me, tdenson or anyone uses it. The point is that it remains a niche feature and isn't something high on the average person's wish list of features they look for when getting a phone.
