Pat faked her death as she couldn't hack living with 'Sunshine' Carol, Bianca and the kids anymore. She bribed the dodgy undertaker to put a random Moon brother in the coffin and spirited away to run a cocktail bar on the Costa Del Sol with Den Watts who was revealed as David's real father.
They come back as Bianca has buggered off and Carol will run off to defrock the vicar.

I don't see how they could without having Pat pretend she had cancer (?) As much as people want Pat back she was written out permanently with no room for a return.

After stealing Janine's millions, Pat flies back to the Square in her private helicopter (sipping champagne) and subsequently takes over the Vic.
As much as I'd love this it won't EVER happen. Kirkwood made sure Pat could never be brought back by throwing cancer, a heart attack and an on screen death at her. I do think Pat's death has damaged EastEnders irreparably but bringing her back would damage it even more. With Dirty Den there was doubt in the minds of the viewers that he was actually dead and a few plot holes from back when his body was fished out of the canal. With Pat there is no doubt whatsoever that she's dead. It shouldn't be a case of wishing she could be brought back. She should still be alive so there is no discussion on the subject.

Sadly you are right, it will never happen because there just is no way to bring her back that wouldn't involve turning EastEnders into Sunset Beach. But in years to come, when EastEnders is no longer with us, I think people will look back at Pat's death and see it as one of the nails in the coffin for a once-brilliant show.
I'm just thinking about her interactions with the Carters, her consoling Ian in the aftermath of Lucy's death and her reaction to the fire and think what could have been. Damn you Kirkwood. Worst EastEnders' decision ever, Pat could have been with us for many years to come.

Agreed. I think the losses of Pat and Pauline, the baby swap, Dirty Den's flop comeback and the combination of the Kirkwood and Newman eras will be looked to as the nails in the coffin of EastEnders. You have to give DTC credit for managing to even slightly pull EastEnders out of the death throes it was in but I personally think the damage is too severe to stop permanently. I'm making the most of this era because it will probably be the last good one.

I must admit I think if they just said look killing off the characters, pat, Katy, cindy, angie etc was done out if pettiness the actors didn't want to come back / stay so we killed them off, sorry please just bare with us as we bring them back in
Pat is one colourful EE character that should never have been axed and I for one would welcome a resurrection.
I would happily go along with Pat just strolling back onto the square as though nothing had happened.
