This I would 100% accept, although I'd slightly change it. I'd rather it be near the end conclusion of Lucy's death (or just after the reveal) and Ian starts to go down a similar path to before his breakdown and then he sees Pat.

Could even be a two-hander who's there giving him advice etc.

I could easily swallow any half arsed lie they made to get Pat back. It should never have veen allowed to happen. Pat was Eastenders. Everything revolved around her.

I would applaud the Beeb for simply putting a notice at the start of the episode stating that "Kirkwood is a moron, Pat will be returning from the dead in this episode."

... Or, we all know how dodgy that Les Coker is. Maybe Pat's funeral set the precedent for having bodies of unknown people in the places of main characters.

Pat: No dear. Doctors told me I had cancer and there was nothing they could do. I was all prepared for my death when they rang up and told me there had been a mistake, it was Pat Kutcher that was dieing, not Butcher. Anyway, Derek Branning being back in the square terrified me, so I persuaded Bianca to just help me fake my death as planned and I went of to New Zealand. When Simon came to meet me at the airport he even popped some flowers on my grave to to make it look real.

Roxy: But what about the kids? They grieved you

Pat: I couldn't risk derek finding out. I'm sure they will be pleased to see me though.

Roxy: What did Derek do that was so bad?

Pat: he raped me Roxy. Hes David's father...

Roxy: ah right, my dad did that to Stacey so she murdered him, I'm meeting her for drinks later, you should come for a catch up

Pat: oooh I'm gasping for a gin, I'll see you there love, just off to unpack now and tell the Butchers the good news.

(then everything simply goes back to normal)”

That's great. I know this forum gets too obsessed with X raped Y on occasion, but with Derek I genuinely thought the signs were there. Pat was scared of him and Pat was scared of no one.

I think they could get away with saying that Pat was born one of a pair of identical twin girls, out of wedlock.

Her strict grandparents demanded that both girls should be adopted, but seeing their daughter's distress eventually softened their hearts and allowed Pat's mum to go back to the children;s home to get her babies back, but too late. One baby had already been adopted and the children's home would not give an address, as they said the deed was done. Pat's mum took home her remaining daughter - Pat.

Pat grew up never knowing she had a sister. The sister is now tracing her roots and comes to Walford searching for her long lost twin ....

far-fetched, but it COULD work .....

Plus the whole Derek chasing David away would make sense.

Think about it. This era is being overseen by a producer who cares about the series and is passionate about it being successful. All it takes is a succession of producers who don't give a damn about the show for it to slip back into it's old ways. For every DTC, Santer and Yorke there are many more Kirkwoods and Newmans. The show's fortunes in the last decade have been a mixed bag to say the least.

Pat's return is both the most unlikely thing to happen and possibly the one total shark jump the majority of viewers would excuse

They can't take any risks with DTC's successor, whoever it may be. As you said, the show could easily slip back into the dreadful mess it was until recently. A safe pair of hands, someone who knows the show backwards - Tony McHale, Tony Jordan, Sarah Phelps - would be ideal.

Any of those would be a dream. Under absolutely no circumstances should Mr. Simon Ashdown ever be handed the reigns of this show. I suspect he had a lot more to do with it's decline than people realise.

I think if any of the producers feel that EE is on the way out then they just say f*ck it and bring back Pat, Kathy, Cindy and everyone who wants too. Best ending ever.

They should just act like the storyline never happened. Bring Pat back and have none of the characters notice anything strange. Just don't reference her death at all until she dies again.

This is not an episode of The Walking Dead - although I would pay good money for the wonderful Daryl to shoot a couple of crossbow bolts straight through Philth's face.

She was still leaving. The mistake Kirkwood made was closing the door on her.

It's unclear whether PSC saw herself returning permanently or for guest stints. All we know is that she saw herself returning some day.

The only way past dead characters (that are not played by deceased actors) could plausibly come back is if the BBC took it off air for a couple of months and the whole series was rebooted.

EE jumped the shark years ago.

It has jumped a few more since then.

Even better if her return is Sharon taking Denny to Walford Sea World for a treat as he's been good and only annoyed 3 people that day. They spot the star attraction: A strangely familiar cockney matriarch called Madam of the Earrings who leaps over marine animals including a hammerhead shark called Kirkwood.

The difference between Pat and then Den and Nick, is that we SAW her die. We heard her last breath, we saw the family grieve and she was buried. It's done. Can we move on?

Kirkwood made a mistake. He was undoubtedly wrong. He should never, ever have done it. But what's done is done.

How would her death scene and funeral be explained? Things like this are best left to US daytime soaps

With Dirty Den there was doubt in the minds of the viewers that he was actually dead and a few plot holes from back when his body was fished out of the canal. With Pat there is no doubt whatsoever that she's dead. It shouldn't be a case of wishing she could be brought back. She should still be alive so there is no discussion on the subject.”

Absolutely this. Killing her off was a huge mistake but it is done and can not be undone. There really is no way round us having seen her die on screen. It is not like Den where there was ambiguity as to what had actually happened to him right from the start thanks to the BBC re-editing the end of the episode so we didn't see him floating face upwards in the Canal with his eyes open which was the original intention.

Den was shot but it wasn't proved he was dead from what I remember. It would be wrong to try and bring Pat back BUT lets have Simon Wicks back! Nick Berry is a brilliant actor and they could make a return for him work.

Mass audience hallucinations owing to too much New Year's Day booze?
