She's popping in for three episodes so I am sure the Carter haters will be able to cope. It makes sense that she appears for this storyline and it's Ben good putting a face to a name at last.

I don't hate the carters, there just way too big, it's like the 2012 brannings all over again, when they first came in they were wonderful! Linda, mick, nancy, johnny, shirley and tina, the family just keeps gettin bigger and bigger and there really is no need for it! I used to enjoy watching them, but there way too big now, they're trying to give them all storylines and it isn't working, as the only ones worth watching are the ones that originally came in and shirley! I also quite like Stan, but that's it, ever since they've all come piling in, it's too crammed, a lot of the acting is poor from tosh, lee, dean etc... That's the problem I have with the carters, the family NEED to be shorter, it's got a bit of a joke. Apart from that, they are a brilliant family! I'm actually really looking forward to seeing Linda's mom, she sounds very interesting!

Not a good decision. Maria Friedman is far too young to play Linda's mum and perhaps an older (more East End) actress could have played Elaine Peacock.

She is a guest character so it does not really matter. Elaine must have had Linda when she was young like Linda did with her brood.

You do get people in their seventies who look like they are in their fifties. I find no issue with this casting, she looks old enough to be Linda's mother in the promo pics

Linda's only supposed to be 37 isn't she so even assuming Friedman is playing her own age (Elaine might be meant to be a little older) she's have been 17 when Linda was born. For some reason i'd always got the impression that Elaine was quite a young Mum and still sprightly and fun loving. It is not as though they've been worrying about abandoning her to run a big pub by herself when she was elderly.

Anyhow, great casting news - Friedman is a fantastic actress.

I think this is a really lovely bit of casting - I remember Maria many, many years ago playing the social worker in Casualty, and she hasn't really been on screens much since, but she's very well-regarded in musical theatre circles.

Your quite right even if the character is the same age as the actress at 54 she is 17 years older than Linda whose 37 so it's perfectly feasible. And having now looked at the promotional shots of Linda and Elaine they do look good together and there is a resemblance. I was picturing Maria from what I remembered of her in the 90s when she would only have been in her 30s. It's hard to believe she's now playing the grandmother of a bunch of adults. Makes me feel ancient.

You'd never know she is Swiss. She was a regular in season 6 of Casualty and very good, sounded toally English to me!

Well yes. She didn't seem that much older than me when she was in Casualty and now she is playing the mother of a character I consider to be pretty contemporary to me. But, in actual fact Linda is 6 years younger than me and that is actually quite a lot when you are talking about characters whose generation gaps are only about 16 years!

IMO it's not the size of a family that matters it's how they're used and written for that's the main thing. The Brannings became unbearable because of the rubbish writing and character development they received. The Carters so far have been given good material and are very believable as a family so they can bring in millions more carter and I wouldn't care

We'll said. The Carter's all have different personalities and they have spent a lot of time developing the family dynamics. I don't mind that there are ten of them. There are hundreds of us in the Scrabbler family so ten of them doesn't seem that many.

I'd agree with this. There have been other large families in the programme's history - the Beales and Fowlers right at the beginning in the 80s, the Slaters. The problem is when they dominate all the screen time and are shoe horned into other characters lives and stories which was the issue with the Brannings in 2012. Even though the Carters have been involved with Lucy's death and Sharon's plot with Phil and now Alfie burning down the house, they aren't yet over shadowing every other family and plot in the show. - we've had Lucy's death, Carol's Cancer, Charlie Cotton, Stacey's return - all have been pretty unconnected to them.

As always Kitkat, you're spot on. Mick is a really nice guy aswell. Not nice like a cheeky chappy way but a genuinely decent bloke who strikes me as a community oriented man so I like how he is friendly with his own peers as well as caring about Linda's friends

She tweeted talking about three episodes but it's difficult to say whether three episodes is all she's doing at the moment, or is just what she's filmed so far.

I think Linda's Nan is still alive too, who could play her?

I don't think there has been any on screen confirmation of that. A lot of people misinterpreted a comment linda made to one of her kids about Nan but she was referring to their Nan, her Mum.

Still if her mother is only in her 50s it is more than possible is still alive after all she'd only be 80ish if she was another teenage mother.
