As the title says, I accidentally put my ipod nano 6 gen in the washing machine. It still works, in that it switches on, and I can play it when connected to my PC, but the screen is just the blue background colour, and you can't see any of the icons. I'm wondering if any one knows if it's likely that the screen will return to normal as it dries out or will it stay like that.

You should not have tried to turn it on. That could potentially make things worse than they already were.

Ideally you should have taken it apart, removed the battery and used a cloth to dry up as much liquid from the insides as possible. Then leave it in bits to dry out for at least 24 hours and maybe even as long as 48 hours. Inspect it carefully after this and only then put it back together again and see if it works. Now I know that is pretty difficult with things like iPods that don't come apart very easily so can understand if you skip that bit.

But leaving it to dry out for 24-48 hours without touching it would have been the best thing. You may be lucky in that if you leave it turned off for at least a day to dry out thoroughly it might start working again but be prepared for it not to return to full health again.

Thanks chris. I don't think I'd know how to take it apart, but at least it's still working through my computer although I turned it on. I've managed to retrieve everything on it, so at least if I do have to get another one I can just transfer it all onto.

Most modern kit is an absolute nightmare to take apart. Basically the manufacturers don't want you diving inside so make it as difficult as possible to get in without destroying the thing in the process.

But for something like liquid ingress, getting inside is the only real way to clean up the mess properly. Especially with things like tea, coffee and some fizzy drinks that can leave a nasty residue behind.

Plain water is the best beverage to use if you think your expensive toy is thirsty If you leave it to dry out and offer up the correct incantations to the electronic gods plain water might just dry out without causing too much damage, if you can empty out as much of the liquid as possible.

But it can be in the lap of the gods whether it ever works properly again. I've seen kit that has suffered the most horrific abuse at the hands of it's users and yet still worked as good as when it was first taken out of the box. Other stuff I've seen go off in an electronic strop and refuse to work ever again just because you looked at it a bit funny

When you do things like this you need to put the items in a container of rice and leave it to dry for a few days.
