Controlling music on my nettop from my Android tablet?

I have my music stored on my nettop hooked up to play music through my hi-fi but I need to have my TV turned on to see what is what to control things. I was wondering if there was a way of using my Android tablet to control things instead including logging on to Windows, firing up VLC and selecting which music to play?

XBMC and a 3rd party remote app maybe? That might be overkill.

Ta. That looks like it may be exactly what I am looking for given that I will be using the nettop purely for media streaming.

Installed the XBMC remote control app on my tablet and it looks like it still needs my TV to be turned on to see what's what. So still looking for a solution that let's me browse and play music in a similar fashion maybe as on an MP3 player ...

... is there a way to get the nettop to boot up and automatically login (as a guest with no password?) and fire up whatever is needed to allow my tablet to take remote control?

Hi there,

This may not be what you want but this is how I do it. I have all my music stored on a HD plugged into my router (I also have it backed up somewhere else)

I use ES file explorer on my android tablet to browse to the HD on my network and select the songs I want. This is then played to my hifi via a bluetooth adapter which is paired to the tablet. Therefore my pc does not need to be on for me to play my music. I only wish my ps3 would find same hard drive so I could play my video from it!

I hope that is of some use.

That sounds interesting.

Edit: Just tried that. Not sure I want it playing via the tablet though (I do happen to have a Bluetooth adapter I coud plug into my hi-fi). Looking to play direct over cable from the nettop to the h-fi.

When you say cable do you mean cable internet or as in a lead going from nettop to the hifi? if it is the former maybe one of these would suit, I had one but sent it back as it does not support flac.

If the nettop is running windows Splashtop 2 remote desktop app might be worth a look. The pc software loads on startup so I think you'd need to be logged in before using.

i have gone for the simple alternative for now: Running a long audio cable from the laptop where I use it sitting in the captain's chair to the hi-fi amp and playing the music from there leaving the nettop copy to act as backup only.

The simplest route is often the best. Was going to suggest using clementine music player on the nettop and the controller app (Clementine remote) on your tablet. Either way it's what works best for you.

Ta for that. Might look into that next week as the long cable and plug are proving occasionally annoying and sometimes playback is affected by using the laptop for other stuff at the same time. This weekend totally given over to MotoGP and Ryder Cup so no time left for music.

I have XBMC on my computer and use the Yatse app which will do what you want. It can start up (via Wake-On-LAN) and shut down the computer, select playlists or folders and everything is shown with thumbnails etc. It will also start up XBMC from the desktop on a Windows PC, though sadly, not on my Linux box.

Splashtop 2 is great, and free for LAN use (modest cost for internet use). It is like Teamviewer or (not free now) logmein. I use it almost every day when I am away to control my wife's PC. I prefer it over Teamviewer as it is less intrusive and does not leave annoying nag screens.

Even if you find another way of doing what you want, I recommend you try this as you can do almost anything on PC remotely from a phone, tablet or another PC. You can even use it to simply watch what is being played on PC (beats Team viewer hands down here.)

Just search splashtop on web for more details.
