I loved the Magpie Cafe but lots of people told me they weren't the best in town. Quayside won the best chippy in Britain award I believe.

Thanks Walt, I'm in Whitby every September so Quayside will be my first port of call next year!

Correct, Quayside did win the award.

We went to the Magpie last time we went. We ate in and the food was lovely but the cafe seemed to be full of posh old people who looked down their noses at you, in other words the atmosphere wasn't very nice. We wished we'd got them from the take out instead.

Think I might have to take a trip over to Whitby soon and do a taste test.

I'm sure two lots of fish and chips in one day wont do me any harm.

Never known what all the fuss about the magpie was. Places in whitby that are on a par or better without having to queue to get in.

If anyone is ever in York, Wackers fish and chip restaurant on Gillygate is amazing.

Have to say personally I love fish and chips but after eating it always regret it!

I ate at 3 places in Whitby and it was the best I had, but then we didn't queue either time we visited.

Agreed, Great Yarmouth's market chips are well known. While most of the stalls offerings are great, I tend to gravitate towards Brewers as theirs seem to have a little extra something to them taste wise - don't really know what it is, but it's there.

That's true, the usual price I find around there is around £6.25 for large cod and large chips, but it's so easy to find somewhere that'll charge more than that. Places tend to differ on portion size more than price.

Thinking of portion size, to this day I miss the chip shop near where I lived when I first moved out of home. Why - well, they had on the menu cod bites and chips. Each 'cod bite' was like a medium cod cut in half, and you'd get between 5-7 of them per portion(!), and a large chips that itself would feed 3-4 people with ease, all for less than a fiver.

Anyway, in answer to the OP's question - it's a yes from me too. Every week or so on a Friday it's down to the regular for large cod (cooked to order) and regular chips - £5.75 a pop, and goes down a treat.
