In the cast list for 30/09/14, it shows that Aleks desperately tries to get away from Walford as two unexpected visitors turn up on the Square.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b04kf8n2

This would be Marta Shirovs, played by Noeleen Comiskey, and Ineta Shirovs, played by Gledisa Arthur.

I think Marta is his wife and Ineta is his daughter. Will these be permanent characters?

Yep Ineta is his daughter. She appeared previously over Skype or similar.

They haven't been "announced" they've just appeared in a cast list.

Hope they're not staying!
Err why? they haven't even been on screen yet at least give them a chance. Aleks has proven immensely popular with viewers so anything that increases his screen time can only be a good thing.

I hope they stay as it would flesh out Aleks as a character and inject a bit more realism into the show as Eastern Europeans are a big demographic now in the East End.

This was fairly inevitable or else him having a wife/child was pointless. What's the betting that the wife thinks they are still together?

I wonder if they are writing him out?

This. Honestly, you get the impression that some people on here write characters off before they've even appeared.

no way Now that would be a disaster. I hope it's interesting and not just for the sake of it. I love Aleks

She's too busy hanging out with Tommy and Tristan at Vaslavs.

Alek should turnout to be related to the immigrant who Phil married in the 90's although I know they are different nationalities

People on General will ask for them to be sent back to where they came from!

I can just see it now, "Eastern European wife and kids follow husband to Britain, where said husband has taken our local women!"

I think its a great idea to bring his wife and kid here and into the programme as its a great way of developing Alek's character which is generally so important in any programme of film, to develop the characters.

Good thinking, whoever thought of it!

Not really. Characters come and go but the square and the Vic are the biggest part of the show.

I don't mind who they bring in as long as they are not just pointless additions who are just going to prop up the bar. My hope is that Aleks' wife is quite fiery and puts him in his place.

Don't Eastern European females have a feminine version of the family surname? A quick google suggests if this chap is Latvian and called Shirovs his wife and daughter would be called Shirova.

Took me about 90 seconds to find that out. Wonder why the Eastenders writers didn't bother

Depends where you're talking about, "Eastern Europe" is a huge area with many diffrent cultures and languages. I guess it depends if Aleks' family is ethnically Latvian or belongs to the large Russian minority.

Call me a cynic but I'd wager the fact this fictional family's surnames are all the same, is less due to 'stenders giving the original character a comprehensive fictional ethnic background which means he is descended from a Russian sub-culture where they have gender neutral names.

And more due to them having not given it a single thought.
