ITV ‘baffled’ by Coronation Street ratings decline
An article from a few days ago on ATVtoday http://www.atvtoday.co.uk/p60630-itv/ Will let you have a read for yourself but the opening of the article states: Quote:
ITV Granada bosses are said to be ‘baffled’ as to why their flagship serial is dwindling in the ratings. Coronation Street has seen viewing figures slide across the past year.
Do ITV Granada employ a bunch of thickos? If they cannot see the mess themselves that Blackburn is making of the show then they should really not be working in the broadcasting industry. |

I've read lots of comments on here from people criticising Stuart Blackburn and his storylines. I thought some of them were a bit harsh but then I read an interview with him in Inside Soap.
The man is in a world of his own making. He thought the Phelan storyline with Anna was great. He enthused about the upcoming story with Faith. He seems to love the whole Anna/Owen family. For me as a long time viewer they are one of the worse aspects of the programme. He has no idea what the viewers want. |

Phelan storyline was awful and predictable. Maddie is dreadful. Faye being pregnant is a silly idea. Gary and Izzy splitting up was stupid. Todd makes me want to throw stuff at the telly. Ditto Fizz and her baby voice. Even Steve who I love and Ken coming back didn't save it for me. I have every episode since 14th August on my planner unwatched and they'll likely get deleted when we need to free up space.
Of course the worst was Max going from quiet child sitting in his room to mad devil boy overnight and then being diagnosed with ADHD instantly. It takes longer than that to even see a specialist never mind get a diagnosis and meds. The only thing I was glad about was they didn't make it autism with absolutely no prior clue. If they carry on like this even more will switch off. |

Have to ask but will itv address the possible cause of the ratings decline and that is there are too many episodes being made.
ITV will never make the decision to reduce the number of epiosdesof both coronation street and emmerdaily . After all ITV is a business and the shareholders come first |

Really another topic about CS ratings, just makes me lol. It's still above the rest and you will find like most years summer is always down and like the rest of the other soaps viewers will go up more that it's the winter.
Itv will not cut the ep and I don't see why they would anyway, the only think I would say is maybe not two eps on Monday go back to one Sunday but not fused tbh. And itv is not going to do anything with CS or ED they are itv and make the most money for them |

How can they be baffled? Corries crap at the moment. Even Hollyoaks is better at the moment.

As a fan for many years I agree the current storylines and 'personality changes' of some cast members are just awful.
In last night's episode, Gail's & Micheal's performance made me cringe and want to vomit! .......what a terrible storyline!

I agree that these two shows raise alot of money for itv. But are there too many episodes. And is that in turn having an effect on the actors. There dont need to be the amount of episodes in the week that there is. But like i said the shareholders call the tune. After all it is itv plc
At least the BBC knew that EE was going through a bad patch, rather than sit around scratching their heads like the bafoons at ITV are currently doing, and at least took steps to rectify the problems ("Terminating" the contracts of Kirkwood and Newman). |

I was once an avid viewer, now I miss it for weeks and then feel so disappointed that it has not improved. I think it has gone beyond recovery. Needing to get rid of the 'dead wood' - Ken, Deidrie, Gail, etc. and introduce some new complete families, but not like that awful Yasmeen, her voice is terrible.

It is obvious that ITV do not read reviews or forums relating to Corrie, if they did they would understand what is wrong with the show at present - Stuart Blackburn - and would do something about it.

Yes I agree – far too many episodes per week of Corrie and Emmerdale. What happened to shows like Play Your Card Right and Krypton Factor which used to compliment Corrie in the seven till eight slot? I’m not saying these shows were great but they provided an antidote for Corrie. The main problem is they cost money to make. Corrie and Emmerdale are cheap to produce as the sets are built and the cast and crew are already in place.
Another problem is the scheduling – half an hour of Corrie then half an hour of even cheaper junk followed by more Corrie. Many people switch off and don’t switch back. If you get into a good programme that starts at eight on another channel you won’t switch back at eight thirty. All this AND Corrie and The Dale are junk!! Mind you I would rather watch Corrie than East Enders – it would make you want to switch off and read a book. |

Please sack that producer SB that nearly killed Emmerdale! WHY did ITv take him on?
I absolutely LOVE Emmerdale now - so much better with someone else in charge. I also LOVE Corrie - but it has gone a bit skewifff lately (Is that a word?). And this Michael and Gail storyline is sooooo pukey it's untrue I like the story with Jim/Peter/Barlows but that is about it. Craig and wotsername from Emmerdale and her husband is wearing a bit thin now......anything else on it??How is Eccles doing? |

When the street became flooded with brash unsympathetic poorly formed characters and the age mix there once was is no longer.

The main problem is that you have two types of fan that watch Corrie.
Those that want the old fashioned Corrie and those that want the stunts and dramatic stories. It is difficult to please both. Corrie's saving grace in the past was great characters. Unfortunately even those that were great characters in the past are not as good as they were. Something does need changing. However turning the programme into the cosy programme of old is not the answer. What is needed is a better balance of stories between cosy humorous stories and dramatic stories. Many of the stories over the past few years all had good potential but they have not been executed as well as they could have been. Getting rid of characters is also not the answer as most of them have been much better in the past. So it could be the writers, the producer (SB) or maybe the Executive Producer (Kieran Roberts). Or maybe viewers want more form drama series than soap operas can deliver. People (especially younger people) are more interested in programmes like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones and find Soap's boring. |

I think the storylines are so boring. I am fed up with seeing the prison, also fed up with Tracey and Rob. Cannot stand the Phelan's household. I quite like Gail's household but I too agree with the storyline with Max is silly.
I wish the Andrea and ex husband storyline will come tro an end - that is so boring too! |

Nicely said Old Man 43!!
I don't think that Corrie should be aimed at the younger people anyway!! It was never aimed at youth in the old days was it? Kids aged 8 - 12 should be doing their homework, and teenagers should be watching or playing games on their X-boxes in the bedroom!! Corrie is for ADULTS!! It was in my day! |

The younger characters on a soap opera are there to develop stories for the adults. Some of those younger characters can develop into adult characters themselves. After all Ken, Steve & Gail were all younger characters at one time. By the way I am 52 next month and I am a major Game of Thrones fan along with many other American Sci-Fi and Fantasy programmes as well as programmes like Bones, Rizzoli & Isles and Rookie Blue. Most of these programmes have soap elements in them. |

The problem with SB is he has no respect for the history of characters and will give a storyline to a character even if it doesn't fit. He also seems to have a thing for male mental illness due to his own personal struggles and pushes these issue based stories around mental illness but executes them poorly, see Zak Dingle in Emmerdale and Aaron with his blink and you'll miss it self harming plot. Now we're going to have Steve McDonald suffer depression and Max has suddenly been diagnosed with ADHD. He assassinates characters just to push his own agenda, there's then no follow up and mental illness is an ongoing issue that doesn't just go away... At least Kate Oates acknowledges this and has made reference to Aaron's self harming since his return. Stuart Blackburn also can't do big reveals, Stella discovering Karl started the fire should have been huge considering the importance of those characters, yet it happened and fizzled out. Same with Tina & Peter affair, it was a wasted opportunity to not have Carla and Tina face off... It is these confrontations that allow memorable drama and yet he lets opportunities like that pass by. The guy is clueless when it comes to drama and seems fixated on raising awareness of male mental illness but has so far failed to convey that in a way that would resonate with the audience as can't plot or pace a storyline.

YOUR EMPLOYING THE REASON IT'S CRAP AND PAYING THEM WAGES FOR CAUSING IT YOU HALFWITTED MORONS!! Sheesh, itv are so blind they need a white stick and a guide dog, actually scrap that, a guide dog wont cut it and they haven't managed to come up with dogs for the perpetually thick yet.
