Samsung UE32H5000 won't output 5.1 using laptop/optical cable

I have my laptop connected to the TV via. HDMI.

I have my 5.1 sound system connected from the optical port on the TV.

When I go to "Playback devices" on the laptop, the "Samsung HDMI" device is only showing Stereo during configuration.

Any ideas?

Most optical outs on TV's will only output 5.1 from an internal Freeview HD tuner, NOT from any external sources.

What you need is a surround system that has multiple HDMI's on, and one that feeds out to the TV.

Looks like the TV only allows stereo output from external devices.

Options would be......

Optical from laptop to sound system, HDMI from laptop to TV or......

.....HDMI to sound system, HDMI from sound system to TV.

If your laptop doesn't support optical or your amp does not support HDMI then have a look at an HDMI Audio extractor, it will strip the audio from the HDMI and send it to your sound system via optical and send video to your TV via HDMI.
