If Peggy hadn't returned briefly last year, tonight would've been a massive shock
It had only been a year since Peggy's last guest appearance on EastEnders when she visited Phil in hospital, so it wasn't a massive shock to see her back. When she returned for a short stint in 2013, it was announced months prior to it actually happening. It was never a big deal.
Plus, Barbara always made it clear that she'd return for guest stints whenever asked to, so it didn't exactly come as a shock. If tonight's episode had been the first time we'd seen Peggy since her big 2010 exit, then it definitely would've been a huge surprise for everyone. |

I think they should've done all they could to get Grant for the scene as well. Surely Ross Kemp would've eventually agreed to one quick scene and it would've been interesting to see Grant and Ronnie on screen together for the first time.
