Hollyoaks really is dire
I know Hollyoaks has been on the decline for some time now, but I'm not finding ANY character likeable at all. All the storylines are drawn out and boring.
Ste and his drug abuse just isn't compelling what so ever, we've already been there done that time and time again. The whole Sonny Valantine fiasco is a total suspension of reality. The scenes in the car with him last night and the McQueens was like some corny excert from Sin City. The whole John Paul storyline is drawn out and messy. Nancy Mcqueen just isn't likeable for me, and the whole thing has dragged out for far too long. The fact that Diane can't see the shit for the trees with her own son really annoys me, and I get sick of seeing her whimpering over every episode. Maxine, Sienna, Dodger, again all a massive suspension of reality and a pile of crap. The producers have tried to use shock value to intrigue us into the storyline, but it just doesn't work because Hollyoaks has too much of it, and there is always some kind of shock. This storyline may have worked in EastEnders, Emmerdale or Corrie, but is just so unrealistic in Hollyoaks. The only character I actually like is Sienna's daughter. Everything about the soap now just feels so corny and unrealistic, not a patch on how it was many years ago. I really don't see a way back to make the show realistic again. |

I can still watch Hollyoaks and want to tune in, but there are a few SL /Characters that wind me up.
Ste and his drugs - change the record Diane - Stop being so goddamn righteous. Totally understand you'd stick up for your "son" but stop causing such a scene. Sienna - Like the mental health side of things and her tricks but disagree with the Dodger being Nico's Dad situation. Too far fetched. Maxine / Dodger / Patrick - Still finding this entertaining. Sonny - Glad they let him fall in the lake! Carmel's naivety is nauseating. Leila / Perry / Cameron - I like Cameron and Perry but get bored of Ziggy sticking his nose in. |

But I think it's maasively hypocritical of the McQueens apart from Carmel to condemn Sonny whilst protecting that imbecile and then to be ok with killing him

But that's what's fun, it's not realistic, nor does it really try to be.
I assume you mean Nancy Osborne? Unless she married JP and no one told us I think it does have too many shocks and should calm down a little on that front |

Sonny blatantly isn't dead; who do you think got the police to drag the car up?
Hollyoaks has always been a bit 'outrageous'; my issue with it now is this ridiculous emphasis on family drama. This incident with JP is the first time in ages other people in the village have actually acknowledged that there are issues outside of their little family. There is also a complete lack of friendship in the show. In real life, people have friends and families have other families that they are friendly with/some families that they are rivals with. |

Eastenders is always so miserable, Emmerdale and Coronations street I cant even tell apart they are so boring. At least hollyoaks is exciting and has characters I like and hate |

It's very unrealistic, inconsistent, features poor writing and stunts seem to be the main focus and aim these days. Shock value! Killing off characters for that factor which doesn't make it shocking anymore because it's been done too many times and Kirkwood is still doing it. Changing personalities of characters in a very silly way, throwing repetitive plots e,g gangster Grace and Trevor, Ste on drugs, Darren gambling. It's like I've seen these almost 100 times.
Hollyoaks really is shit now, compared to what it used to be years ago. I really don't know what went wrong with Kirkwood. His last era may not have been perfect but it was great and so much better than the dross we are seeing now. |

Because she's a Mcqueen, just like ED with Dingle's and EE with the Mitchell's they can do any crime they want and get away with it.

Then why do they continue to persist in covering issue-based storylines like male rape, domestic abuse and transsexual characters and hailing themselves for how well-researched and sensitive the storylines supposedly are?
The moral compass of the show is so skewed also. People get away with murder, bullying, kidnapping on an almost weekly basis. Innocent people get put in jail and treated like crap. Relationships never last. Case in point is Nancy and Darren. They are married a few weeks and already there are problems. It is rediculous. Attitudes to to death are really strange. Grieving does not seem to be an emotion that exists in Hollyoaks land. It means that when somebody dies there is no emotional impact, it is straight onto the next OTT story. |

Well said. It really galls me that they pretend to be so caring about sensitive issues (to the extent that they have a helpline at the end of the ep) but in reality they could not give a sh1t. They just want to pile on shock after shock and make the story as OTT as possible.

ETA: Well said dubgaz. If they want to be unrealistic and 'fun' then forget trying to be about real issues. They can't do both successfully. It makes a mockery of any "sensitivity". |
