700 yards from my fibre cabinet

I'm 700 yards from my fibre cabinet, my download speed is 17Mb on Infinity 1, is this good?

700 yards would translate to about 640m from the cabinet. So you should be getting Infinity 1 advertised of at least 38meg. Cause I've seen other users on the thinkbroadband forums syncing at at least 45meg about 600m from there cabinet on the 76meg package.

If you put your address and postocde into the adsl checker and it should give you an estimate of what speed you should be getting. (or as your with BT just put your phone number in)

I'm about 600m and I get sync at 53Mbps. If 700 yards is 640m as the poster above says, then I would have expected you to get a lot more.

If it was a self install, I would be looking at the internal wiring and making sure your router/modem is in the master socket (assuming you have one).

Well 700 yards is actually 640.08 metres to be exact...but lets not be picky

we are nearly 1Km from the cabinet and get 29Mbps, so I think something is wrong with yours.

Are your doing your speed test on a wired or wireless connection ?

It should always be "wired"

Good shout that man.

An 802.11g WiFi connection would max out in the mid 20's Mb/s speed so 17Mb/s would not be beyond the realms of possibility, especially if there is interference from neighbouring networks.

So if the OP is using WiFi the first thing to do is plug a lead in to the router and turn off WiFi on the laptop (just to be sure which connection you are using) and try again. See what you get and report back.

Not strictly true, the HH5 can all but max out an Infinity 2 connection over WiFi, just like this http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3798563957

If it's 802.11n or better it can. But if the OP is using 802.11g then it won't. And the level of interference can have an impact as well.

True that, but I find WiFi speeds with the HH5 drop away very quickly once I leave the room where the router is situated.

In any event, when reporting a fault the first thing the CS agent will ask is the connection wired or wireless and if it's wireless will ask for a wired reading.

Wired or wireless I get 17.5 download 2.4 upload.

BT HomeHub 5 on Infinity 1 Windows 10 Windows Evaluation Preview Evaluation copy. Build 9841.

When I got the connection in July 2013, download speeds were around 23 plus. I assume the drop is due to the cabinet filling up.

It could well be crosstalk. but I would still expect substantially better than what you are getting (above 30 on the download).

I'd suggest that you have a substandard line. It is quite common for speeds to slowly drop on a bad line as DLM tries to stabilize the connection. Is there any noise on your voice circuit?

No noise on my voice circuit.

BT broadband tester says my speeds are good because the download speed from exchange to router is close to the router to computer speeds. So that would be true no mater what the download speed is as long as both download speeds matched.

There are many factors that affect the speed. Quality of the signal or simply put the starting rate from the FTTC port in the cabinet. Most likely factor is the quality of the copper/ aluminium in the ground your line is on. Then the wiring situation in your house. You could just simply have a fault on your line, hopefully it can be fixed. Give BT a ring and see what they say.
