I didnt cut mine down because the SIM and Micro SD Card share the same tray on the Moto X Play and they sit back to back. With the Nano being thinner i thought i'd best play it safe.

Changing nano sim to micro or standard sim
I phoned my local Tech shop looking for a converter to convert from a nano sim to a micro sim. They explained they had no converters but would take a new sim card, press out the nano and micro parts and put my nano sim in the micro sim part. I found an old sim card and did the job at home in a few minutes. Incidently when I asked what the charhe would be they said NO charge and they are a repair shop.
