Phone Fault
I had crackling line and broadband dropping for a couple of days and finally the landline phone stopped working altogether although internet worked at low speeds.
I reported the fault to my ISP/phone line provider (not BT) who have said that I need to arrange for one of their engineers to come out. I'm a bit concerned that this may mean a charge. I tested my phones and my internet (and both together) in the test socket and it all works fine. However, using the socket in the face plate now results in nothing working. I have no extensions wired into my master socket - so is it ok to just continue using the test socket? Does this mean that it is probably just the face plate that is faulty? If so, can I buy a replacement without incurring any issues from BT / my ISP? My master socket is BT without Openreach logo on so I presume it's a bit old. Would I have to replace the face plate with an Openreach one and would it be the same? Can I get away without getting an engineer out? |

If you have no extensions then you could just continue using the test socket. What you could do though is replace the faceplate with a filtered type like this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Solwise-ADSL...dp/B003H6GUNA/ Which means you do not need a plug in filter anymore. It would certainly be worth cancelling he call out if you can as you are likely to be charged as it is not a line fault. And that could run to three figures! But if it all works OK in the test socket then chances are it's not the line. Especially if it then stops working when you put the faceplate back on. |

Your ISP should have asked you to do that.As above cancel any arranged visit as you will be charged if it is the faceplate. |

Thank you very much for your help.
I hadn't arranged an engineer's visit yet, so I'll save myself the bother (and money). I'll try get a new face plate. |
